OSCILLATION, The - Out Of Phase (DC Recordings) Comentários: The tracks on 'Out of Phase show an artist who is as comfortable making pop songs as expansive psychedelic freakouts. Tracks like 'Respond In Silence' demand comparison with the harder edge of the 70's krautrock scene. The lambent vocal tones of 'Hear Your Sadness' recall bands like Spiritualized or Loop at their most medicated, 'Liquid Memoryman' like The Ruts battling their way out of an echo chamber to a background of white noise. "Out Of Phase" contains the single "Head Hang Low", a blissed out reworking of Julian Cope's moribund ballad from 1984 newly rendered by Castellanos into a bitter sweet dose of pop melancholia. This single is also available as a limited one-sided etched 7" and multiple download from 8th October. ATHEUS / QUANTEC / BVDUB / REMOTE - In Loving Memory 3:4 (Styrax Germany) Comentários: **Orange Vinyl** Another predictably indispensable twelve from the Styrax posse, the third in the "In Loving Memory" series, pressed up on gorgeous transparent orange vinyl and featuring exclusives from Atheus, Quantec, BVDub and Remote. Atheus opens the twelve with "Deploy", a squashed midnight dub track reminiscent of classic Deepchord material and proof, if it were needed, that this guy is fast making a name for himself in the dub techno scene with some of the most floating bassline House you'll hear this year. Quantec opts for a more washed-out sound, "Metamorphosed" building on stretched chords and gently padded drums, while the mysterious BVdub supplies the longest track here, immersed in stretched bass tones and subtle changes that work a treat. Meanwhile's Remote ends the EP with a short and utterly engrossing bassline session that finds the perfect balance between ethereal arrangements and quietly propulsive percussion. LCD SOUNDSYSTEM - Someone Great (DFA UK) Comentários: A slow-burning masterstroke, quite why this track casts shadows over All My Friends, North American Scum et. all of the LP's other achievements is hard to pin down, but as soon as that crisp electronic skitter weaves inbetween the sea-sick synthesizer drone in the song's opening minute and a half, the deal is done. Perhaps it's bandleader James Murphy's lyrical directness, the sumptuous, shivering instrumentation or the way the track slowly and effortlessly unwinds over six and a half minutes, Someone Great just affects quite unlike anything else released this year. With this very generously expanded CD single, DFA serve up the aforementioned track with a host of all-star remixes. Sound of Silver opener Get Innocuous is injected with electronic glitches and fuzz-synth in the hands of Soulwax, Carl Craig pairs Sound of Silver down to a minimalist techno workout, Us V Them is refigured as ambient instrumental by Windsurf, Gucci Soundsystem work some understated magic on Time To Get Away and the affair is wrapped up by a KCRW-caught live version of Us V Them. A welcome reminder of how jaw-droppingly strong Sound of Silver really is and a celebration of one of the tracks of 2007, the Someone Great EP is an essential purchase. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

HOLY FUCK - LP (Young Turks) Comentários: Calling yourself Holy F*ck is certainly a sure way NOT to get covered in most magazines and websites I suppose. I mean there's no covering it up is there, even with a star or two in the title to cover up offending vowels we still all know what it says, and blaspheming while swearing really is the best way to upset the Mid West. Good plan then, but you've got to have the tunes to back up such a rambunctious name, and thankfully Holy F*ck have just the right balance to make it work. With a humorous technicality pillaged straight from the Battles school of math rock and songs that they claim to be 100% improvised (this album was all recorded on tour!) there's an energy and vibrancy that you frankly don't get on many records, let alone electronic records. People have compared it to Krautrock, but when did Krautrock ever possess a wicked sense of humour like this? When Holy F*ck blend technicality with the kind of sounds you last heard on Pilotwings for the Super Nintendo then you know they're doing something right, and when they add a propulsive bassline and some clattering percussion into the mix? Well I'm sold, that's all there is to it. Easily the best record this year to contain a swear word in the title... and they're from Canada too - I shoulda known! in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

PYLON - Gyrate Plus (DFA US) Comentários: "In my top 100 of all time, this record falls very near the top." Michael Stipe, R.E.M. In 1987 Bill Berry, fresh from his band REM being hailed the most important rock group in America, dismissed the accolade with the plain retort; "We're not the best rock 'n' roll band in America, Pylon are." Now, thanks to the almost-unfaltering DFA label, Pylon's second, hugely influential LP 'Gyrate' is smartly reissued in expanded, remastered form. What is astounding listening back to Gyrate 27 years after its original release is how whilst embodying the post-punk aesthetic of 1979, it stills sounds absolutely contemporary. Indeed, each of Gyrate Plus' sixteen cuts resonate with the responses of the many admirers of the outfit's gloriously angular, grit and dust pop compositions. The taut, minimalist pop aesthetic of set opener 'Cool', has been appropriated by Deerhoof, (especially in this year's essential 'Friend Opportunity'). On 'Precaution', the chanting interlude is an almost exact pre-cursor to that of Kim Deal's Tony's Theme, from the Pixies' Surfer Rosa LP of 1988. Formed in 1979 in Athens, Giorgia, Pylon's art student line-up adopted the most common pop lineup of Guitar, bass, drums and voice reconfiguring 'pop' as concept and product. The voice of Vanessa Briscoe Hay, a stark, rough-edged dagger of an instrument, is the natural pre-cursor to Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon. Gyrate posesses the directness in delivery of Patti Smith, Blondie's hook-laden accessibility, the joyful viscerality of Talking Heads and Joy Division's sensitivity to understated arrangements. TUNNG - Comments Of The Inner Chorus (Thrill Jockey US) Comentários: Without wanting to exhaust your tolerance for figurative comparisons this early on in a review, Tunngs second full length ('Comments On The Inner Chorus') opens with the kind of mealy instrumentation and fizzing electronics that suggest leaden skies and fog-shrouded ramparts - a situation merely heightened with the distant cry of "break in the Sun, till the Sun breaks down". If it wasn't such a hoary cliché, this is where we'd pull out our Wickerman reference... Very much at the crossroads where the more traditional aspects of British folk and the new-guard of -tronica suffixed troubadours collide, Tunng have seen their idiosyncratic breed of honeyed-acoustica attract attention from the Broadsheet/BBC4 cabal, as well as appealing to scene fanaticists and those who've stumbled in via Jose Gonzales and his bouncy-balls. Now signed to Full Time Hobby, Tunng really do coax the very best of their well-worn palate - luxuriating in a sound that references the likes of Nick Drake, Jose Gonzales, The Notwist, and any number of talented folk-founded types, yet never descends into the more twee regions that can often blight this genre. Unreasonably accessible throughout, 'Comments...' follows on from the opening electro-folk of 'Hanged' with previous single 'Woodcat'; wherein the Tunng duo of Sam Genders and Mike Lindsay unreel a fleeing-glimpse of a song that builds incrementally throughout with heartfelt melodies (which wouldn't look out of place on a Simon & Garfunkel record) and a sense of joyful loss ("I miss having coffee watching TV") that is poignant, rather than mawkish. Closing with a stuttering patch of silicon-sliced production that keeps it firmly in the 21st Century, 'Woodcat' acts as a a camera obscura for the rest of the LP - with 'The Wind Up Bird' undercoating it's fragile shell with a brace of violins and mandarins, 'Stories' coming across like 'Pause'-era Four Tet, whilst 'Jenny Again' (borrowing a melody from The Sundays) is likely what Elliot Smith would have sounded like were he from Blighty. Elsewhere, 'Sweet William' matches waterlogged timber with filigree electronics, 'It's Because We've Got Hair' is a beautiful slice of boy/girl folk-pop, whilst the throbbing bass, cold-water synths and chittering beats of album closer 'Engine Room' could happily grace a Daedelus release. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

MURPHY, James & PAT MAHONEY- Fabriclive36 (Fabric) Comentários: "Do it until you like it, that's actually our motto." - James Murphy Since its inception just under six years ago, Fabric's compilation series has turned into somewhat of an institution in the dance-mix field. A result of both the near-unwavering strength and sheer scale of its output (one release a month), James Murphy & Pat Mahoney here step aside from their main, (and quite successful) project, LCD Soundsystem, to join the roster for FABRICLIVE 36. For this venture the pair aquired a new machine, Bozak; the world's first handmade DJ mixer, and Bozak deserves praise indeed; Murphy and Mahoney's seamless 24-track mixtape is a sonic silvermine, DFA co-founder Murphy explaining how "Everything sounds bigger, smoother and beautiful..." in its presence. A deep dedication and love of dance music in all of its myriad forms inhabits 36, a set which relishes in the past, nods to the present and flirts with the future. Both scholarly and outrageous fun, 36 sets seminal disco against tech-infused funk, deep rare grooves against LCD's own New York disco funk (see Hippe Priest Burn-out). Influential artists such as Donald Byrd & 125th St, Chic, Lenny Williams, Junior Byron and Jackson Jones each have their 3 minutes of fame, and as Peter Gordon and the Love of Life Orchestra close the set with the church choir call of Don't Don't, it's clear the LCD boys have crafed something quite spectacular; an ode to heroes, a dancefloor killer, a glorious next step in Fabric's dizzying evolution.... in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

CHLOE - The Waiting Room


CHLOE - The Waiting Room (Kill The Dj France) Comentários: After five years of sporadic releases on labels like Karat, Gomma and Bpitch Control, French DJ and producer Chloe Thevenin has finally got round to releasing her debut album. The Waiting Room is hardly the straight-forward dancefloor-centric enterprise you might have imagined, taking on all manner of semi-experimental production quirkiness, even throwing in a couple of interstitial tracks that sound like GRM experiments gone wrong. Although hardly the most sophisticated techno you're likely to hear, there's an undeniable charm to Chloe's ramshackle productions. Take for example the melodic minimalism of 'I Want You'. Based around a fairly simple soundest the track bleeps along with a warm, oddly homemade feel. Next up, 'Be Kind To Me' succeeds for the same reasons, this time though there's a far thicker production, with vocal elements flickering in and out of the mix whilst a wall of synth strings fleshes the whole thing out. One of the most successful tracks on the album is 'Around The Clock', a jazzy electroacoustic piece that melds brass instruments with clockwork percussion in a fashion Matthew Herbert would be proud of. The Waiting Room is a far more textured and varied album than you might have imagined, and consequently makes for an involving, consistently entertaining listen. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

To prove he's just as comfortable knocking out hip hop as he is anything else, "Restless" features Leeds very own Testament (resident MC at the Gilles Peterson WW award-nominated New Bohemia night) blessing the mic with his unique style. A masculine bassline and dirty drum machines are shaking and rolling like there is no tomorrow. Then the typical Legowelt synths come in to take things to another level... Grande! On the flip side nice retro sounding tracks by Orgue Electronique (On a String) and Gibson Fowler (House Galore).. 2 old school Chicago tracks for the aficionado's of that sound. LUKID - The Now EP


LUKID - The Now EP (Werk) Comentários: The Werk label are just so on-it right now, with last week's massive Disrupt album seemingly finding a home with pretty much all of you with even a passing interest in BASS musics, and now the return of Lukid, spiritual brethren to the mighty Flying Lotus. This beautifully cut four-tracker opens with the demented dusty perucssion and wobbly synths of "The Now" - a track that sounds like the dream hookup of Dr. Who Dat, Pharoah Sanders and Burial with its ageless aesthetics and indecipherable stylistic quirks. Beneath the bubbling percussion there's a simmering feast of squashed detritus, layers of found sound and heavily processed ambient swathes - the result being a truly jawdropping fusion of experimentation and function, the sort of thing we just can't resist. "Ski Fly" on the flip sheds much of the dense baggage and operates on a more focused brief - but the percussion here is so tight and the arrangements so loose that you just can't fathom how it was pieced together. Just like much of the fascination with Burial's material lies with the fact that his music isn't sequenced in any traditional sense, Lukid produces drum arrangements that just seem to forever evolve and ever so slightly shift in and out of focus. "Ski Fly" is just utterly sick for this very reason - and once you get to the EP's closing track "56" it dawns on you that the age of frenetic arrangements and clever edits (a la Scott Herren) is simply over - welcome to the era of the laid back operators forever dissecting and f*cking with the templates in front of them and, in the process, f*cking with your minds too. LETTERS LETTERS - Letters Letters (Type) Comentários: Letters Letters marks quite a departure for the Type label and offers up their most tantalising, giddy transmission of the year so far. Far removed from the epic soundscaping and quiet displays the label is best known for, Letters Letters finds Mitchell Akiyama and friends developing a maverick songwriting style housed in complex, almost discordant structures that take some time to sink in - but which eventually plaster themselves to your mind with a determined accessibility that's just effortlessly cool and utterly memorable. We'd go as far as to suggest that "Letters Letters" is one of the most addictive albums we've heard this year - situating itself somewhere between shimmering acid folk and the post-punk sensibilities of bands like Cabaret Voltaire, This Heat or even the excellent Ike Yard. Letters Letters are just the latest in a long line of experimental pop musicians to emerge from Montreal's thriving music scene, and in addition to Akiyama two of the most notable contributors to his Intr-Version label Tony Boggs (better known as Desormais) and Jenna Robertson (aka Avia Gardner) make up the Letters Letters configuration. Not fitting in with any established Canadian indie songwriting strategies, the band draw on the various members' backgrounds in electronic music and apply a grimy DIY sensibility to the writing and production, resulting in a kind of rough 'n' ready new-wave sound, complete with woozy vocals to match the brilliantly acute programming approach. Boggs takes a bit of a frontman role in the group, but there's a charmingly nonchalant vacancy to Jenna Robertson's singing on 'Want To' that exudes a certain quiet grrrl charm, whilst elsewhere there's a bit of boy-girl tag team action on the psych-ish haze of 'Wishing Well'. With a debut album that pumps out a genius clamour from start to finish, Letters Letters are resolutely an underground band, hardly likely to stir up Reading Festival sing-alongs in a manner akin to some of the trio's fellow Montreal denizens, but therein lies the band's greatest strength: they're a glorious mess. PORTABLE - Powers Of Ten


PORTABLE - Powers Of Ten (Sudelectronic) Comentários: Producer Alan Abrahams is already onto his fourth album, having already graced the rosters of Background Recordings and scape with full-length releases. This latest body of work seems to be the fruit of a great deal of collaboration, and no short supply of vocals, though not always in a conventional sense. Voices are mangled and dissolved into the rest of the production on tracks like 'Shifting Sunlight' (which features Tor of Deadcombo), and similarly 'Locate' uses its female vocal as another percussive element, integrating nicely into the 4/4 network of hypermodern techno contortions. 'Arrabida' is an especially successful example of one of the slower tracks on the album, based around some overheated beats, just on the cusp of outright distortion, while elsewhere you'll find variants on an electropop theme, taking a Depeche Mode-like approach to more conventionally song-like works such as 'Albatros' and 'Take Action'. Software nerds are bound to find plenty to keep them engrossed in Powers Of Ten, but beyond the production gloss there's plenty of pop appeal to go round too. Ace. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

INSPIRESCU, Petre - Tips (Cadenza Germany) Comentários: After grabbing attention with an excellent 12 on Vinyl Club and a contribution to the first release of Romanian label Arpiar, Petre Inspirescu now makes his debut on Luciano's Cadenza imprint, with a four track EP of quite astounding quality. Despite Romanian producers emerging quite rapidly throughout techno over the last few months, this EP is perhaps the first time one of their number has appeared on a label with as wide a reach as Cadenza. And judging by the vastly different set of sounds used here, 'Tips' is also an EP which will mark out Inspirescu as one of the most exciting new producers around.The A1 is 'Mostra', the first of four eleven minute tracks on this double vinyl release. It's a slow burning and hypnotic piece of house music, with serrated percussion and spliced zither-like melodies. The dazzling level of detail is bound to evoke comparisons to Luciano or Villalobos but it's plain to hear that Inspirescu has a truly distinct sound of his own. In fact, each of the four tracks here is different, each evoking that rare feeling that you are listening to something genuinely new.B1 is 'Rackadoom', a slightly more uptempo track that's built around a warbling horn sample and time-stretched chattering voices. It's got the same shambolic almost goofy feel as 'Fizheuer Zieheuer' albeit with a structure that's a little more conventional. Following up on C1 is 'Galantar', perhaps the catchiest track of the four, and yet another departure in style. The percussion is almost disco influenced before a skewed and erratic bassline takes things forward to 2007. Then comes the "chorus": a woozy vocal hook drops in to give the track the feeling of warped pop.Finally, as if the first three tracks weren't enough, Inspirescu gives us 'La Creme Bonjour', a deep and grooving piece of house music that's the most classic sounding track on the EP, and the closest thing to a peaktime record on this release. A smattering of psychedelic effects are layered over a bassline that almost sounds like a double bass, and organic, swinging drums.Ultimately, you're left feeling that any one of these tracks alone on a 12" would be a pretty big deal. As it is, with four tracks that sound unlike almost any other artist, it's difficult to envisage many better releases than this in 2007. NEW REWORK ALBUM "pleasure is pretty"


new rework album "pleasure is pretty" out on november 2007: After several releases for the Frankfurt based label Playhouse during the last years Rework now present their second longplayer, on which they continue their work on thrilling post-retro-like New Wave hits and although „Electroclash may have run itself ragged, Rework hasn't stopped giving it another shot.“ Combined with a new rock-rooted attitude and the new female front singer Sascha Hedgehog, who „finds herself singing 'Love Love Love Yeah' abandoning Gallic sensuality in favour of Hoxton-esque disenchantment, programmers Daniel Varga and Michael Kubler wear their sunglasses at night, punching out beats fresh out of 1981.“ For the release they chose the kind of krautrocky imprint Pavlek Records based in Eastern Berlin and Hausmusik Distribution as their partner. Avoiding a long and energeous label search, they prefered to sattle the release within their related network. According to the new formed band-appeal in their music and performance, they decided to leave Playhouse fort hat „roadtrip“. The record felt bit to rocky for the guys from Frankfurt and so Rework came up with the idea of leaving the label for the longplayer, but keeping it tight with Frankfurts Playhouse in order to continue droping their maxi outputs there. The record may not be seen as a turn in the Rework sound, as more as some logical progress for the band: Keeping in touch with dancefloor-culture and at the same time opening up to a more New Wave orienteated kind of feeling to the music. As result the record is filled with their well apprecitated cold dancefloorhits and Elektro-Gitarr-Synth-Ballads. All disguised with straight rhythm patterns and synth-guitar lines in tradition and emotion of Eighties Clubculture and their house music background. Besides that and thanks to their new singer s. hedgehog they also pushed up their ready to rock glam-factor, when they enter stage and start to pump their „Who loves You“ elektro wave sound through the PA-stacks. „Ready for Pressure, Ready for Pleasure...“ „Dont fuck with love, it´s fucking life...“ and „You are so sick and sweet, I am losing myself....“ are some of their lyrical benchmarks, they transport. Exposição Light Against Time no Porto


A exposição itinerante “Light Against Time” do fotógrafo Nuno Moreira chega ao Porto, mais precisamente à Fundação Dr. Luís Araújo no dia 18 de Outubro após passagem por Setúbal, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Santarém e Lisboa. O projecto irá fazer uma tour por todos os distritos de Portugal terminando com um evento especial ainda por desvendar. Segundo o autor, "este tipo de fotografia é a expressão viva de um acaso que combate o controlo técnico desmedido. A luz é precisamente o corte incisivo no tempo e na sombra. É o que marca o ritmo e o acidente fotográfico. O resultado é uma surpresa pois o alvo não é fixo nem as acções calculáveis. A reverberação em formato imagem é assim dinâmica, distorcida e imprevisível." YOKOTA, Susumu - Skintone Collection (Lo Recordings) Comentários: In an era when the biannual release is an accepted norm for a recording artist, the creative output of Japan's Susuma Yokota is little less than staggering. Perhaps as a testament to this, Lo Recordings serve up Skintone Collection; the 32nd release (!) from the fiercely creative Yokota, a fully-rounded retrospective of his large body of work over the past ten years. Comprising choice cuts from giants such as 2000's Sakura through to this years Love or Die, Ben Eshmade's sensitively-compiled fourteen track disc is both a perfect introduction to Yokota for the uninitiated and a necessary indulgence for established followers. Clocking in at a round hour, Skintone... succeeds in illuminating the many facets of Yokota's confounding talent as an ambient composer. Take for example "Live Echo", culled from 2000's The Boy and the Tree, a track in which Yokota's skill for pairing traditional Japanese instrumentation alongside sparse, ethereal electronica takes hynotic effect. Elsewhere, "A Heart-warming and Beautiful Flower" from this years Love or Die LP showcases Yokota's ongoing passion for flanking the organic with the machine-made and constructing each piece from a vast sonic pool. As the insistent piano chord stabs and melodic flourishes interwine with a deep electronic heartbeat and synthesised strings the result is graceful, hypnotic and genuinely moving. Está previsto para o dia 11 de Novembro o lançamento de um novo album de Thomas Melchior numa das mais emblemáticas editoras de techno minimal presente na cena electrónica alemã, Perlon Records. Como já era de se esperar a editora não vai disponibilizar este lançamento no formato digital mantendo-se como sempre fiel à "black beauty" do vinil. O título do álbum vai se chamar "No Disco Future", segundo as fontes Resident Advisor e do All About Minimal Techno, a estrutura do album irá vincar-se maioritariamente em padrões harmónicos e em melodias discretas.

SUN ELECTRIC - Lost &Found (1998-2000) (Shitkatapult Germany) Comentários: Berlin's Sun Electric have reserved their place in history as one of the more forward-thinking electronic acts to have emerged from mainland Europe in the early nineties. With Thomas Fehlmann behind the scenes as 'executive producer', the duo of Max Loderbauer and Tom Thiel went on to release via imprints like R&S, concocting a hybrid of ambience and techno that would later evolve into what we might now term IDM. The music on this disc is a collection of tracks recorded between 1998 and 2000, and since their high profile nineties releases the two producers have gone on to work on separate musical endeavors (Thiel alongside Daniel Meteo as Bus, and Loderbauer with Tobias Freund as Cadenza's NSI in additon to becoming one half of Chica and The Folder). This release comes after the rediscovery of some old Sun Electric material that surfaced on a hitherto lost CD-R Thiel discovered at a friend's house. This archive material was then given the mastering treatment by Pole's Stefan Betke, resulting in a surprisingly fresh sounding selection. The warmth and production depth of pieces like 'Echelon' and 'Shuttle' have helped this music age as well as it has, and undoubtedly that's no mean feat for a any artist working in the extremely time-sensitive, technologically dependent world of electronic music. UUSITALO - Karhunainen


UUSITALO - Karhunainen (Huume Finland) Comentários: Sidestepping the well known Vladislav Delay and Luomo monikers, Sasu Ripatti uses the Uusitalo moniker to frame his abstract house tracks - rolling basslines, reverberating beats and warm, dub-flecked pads and, this time, he's taken his sound back to basics. The laptop has been thrown away (so to speak) and for 'Karhunainen', which is named after a well known stage play written by his father, Ripatti has used entirely analogue equipement and unlike many others who claim this route, he has forgone even digital post-processing. This strategy has given the album a fuzzy charm missing from so much modern electronic music giving it a heady mid-70s Krautrock undertone bringing to mind Cluster or Harmonia for instance. The tight decomposing sounds are heard 'clean' if you will, and while they might be missing the clinical high-end we have now been trained to expect, a few minutes in Ripatti's world and you'll be converted to his way of thinking. The album begins oddly enough with 'Vesi Virtaa Veri' a beatless track, easing us into the cooling Finnish landscape with washes of analogue synthesis before we're introduced to the elastic bass and pounding kick of 'Korpikansa'. This track sets the precedent for much of the rest of the album as Ripatti makes variations on the theme, creating something from almost nothing and showing that there's life in his patented sound yet. Although he might not have taken any giant developmental steps since his early work on the influential Mille Plateaux imprint, you get the feeling that he is slowly and surely honing his craft and I have to say that a Sasu Ripatti record always sounds like a Sasu Ripatti record. With an identity far stronger than so many others in not only techno and house but also in electronic music in general this has no doubt helped his longevity and certainly keeps me on my toes whenever a new release comes together. DISRUPT - Foundation Bit (Werk) Comentários: Probably the most talked-about BASS transmission of recent months (bar the forthcoming Burial and Pinch albums, of course) - the long awaited debut album from Disrupt is with us and is doing things to our woofers we didn't think quite possible. Make no mistake - this is just about the best appropriation of Jamaican dub and 8-bit dancehall you'll likely hear this year - with a slow paced skank and a filthy, uber-bassy production style that has more in common with king Tubby, Black Art and, for that matter, black magic than with any half-arsed wobble presets and lazy dubplates you just might have picked up these last twelve months. Once inside Disrupt's rugged echo-chamber you'll find yourself immersed in a heady, narcotic cloud of smoke, moved by staggered delays, endless reverberations and a tranquilizing cluster of distant instruments and digital detritus all colluding to lull you in and f*ck with your mind good and proper. This is music designed for complete and utter sensory intoxication, tweaked and honed for intense stupefied skanking - and is quite simply one of the most beautifully heavy, chemically enhanced albums you'll hear this year. AMIINA - Kurr


AMIINA - Kurr (Ever) Comentários: Icelandic all-female ensemble Amiina have certainly come a long way since their origins at the Reykjavik College of Music some 15 years ago. At the time the group were a mere string quartet, playing other people's music in an academic environment. All that was set to change once Sigur Ros collared them for some assistance with string arrangements and tour support duties. You might say that a good proportion of Sigur Ros' sound post-Ágætis Byrjun has been directly informed by Amiina's contributions to their sound - you could hear a great deal of common ground between their work on the epic ( ) album and the kind of languorous, romantic strings on their debut AnimminA EP. That sort of effortlessly vast sound still rears its head on this debut album, and by the time you get to 'Glamur', you feel as though Jonsi Birgisson's falsetto could come crashing in at any moment, but of course it never does, and as the album progresses you can hear Amiina slowly getting further and further away from their old ties, gradually and organically finding their own sonic identity. The willowy bowed saw and synthesizer tones of 'Seoul' give the first hints at the band's broadened range of instruments, and on 'Hilli' you can hear a very folksy approach to composition, with the ladies adding their voices to the mix in a beautiful, choral fashion. However, it would be a crime for Amiina not to give their string quartet background a fair representation, and sure enough, on tracks like the majestic 'Sexfaldur' they deliver the goods in spades. 'Lori' is similarly stately sounding, but features some drums, played in a militaristic, almost marching rhythm while a shimmering harpsichord flutters along in an accordingly formal, baroque manner. One of the biggest surprises here comes from 'Blafeldur', an immeasurably graceful piece for brass. There's something wonderfully morose about it that seems to condense all the most successful elements of Amiina's boundlessly elegant music into a brief three minutes. As if all that wasn't enough to recommend this album, just check out the lavish oversized CD packaging. Totally essential stuff and a massive recommendation. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

UNDERWORLD - Oblivion With Bells


UNDERWORLD - Oblivion With Bells (Traffic Japan) Comentários: It's no surprise that there's only a handful of electronic music groups who've been able to stand the test of time by shaping their sounds around both pop and underground music. Chemical Brothers are brilliant at it, but Underworld can lay claim to being the best at it.Their last record 'A Hundred Days Off' was staked as 'a grower' and it certainly lived up to that theme (if you paid attention for more than three seconds, you'd realise that it was a bloody good album).With a few days' rest in between projects, minus the anthology, the duo (we wish it was 'the trio') is back with new record, 'Oblivion With Bells'. It's been slated as a journey, but if you've listened to the last few outings, you'd already know that. It's kind of like saying Monopoly is about money.True to form Underworld tread their own path through modern electronic music tipping a nod to current sounds, styles and production techniques but never afraid to let their song writing and musicianship shine out in this digital world. 'Oblivion with Bells' draws heavily on Rick and Karls’ vast array of musical influences (Nick Drake, Def Mix, Ricardo Villalobos, Can, James Holden, Eno) and experiences performing worldwide to create a truly unique Underworld journey. The album kicks off like Saturday night with Sven Väth, Simian Mobile Disco and Frankie Knuckles all fighting to get on the decks, then takes you over the flat fields of rural Essex, through Kings Cross with its olympic dreams and piss stained alleys, ending blissed out in a hidden cove in Ibiza. Epic techno nestles next to frail acoustics, beatific prose next to sharp urban observation, amazing sound texturing mixed with mobile phone recordings, rarely has the Underworld palette been so rich.You can tell yourself you won't go into this with expectations, that you really want to just listen to what the boys are doing, but you know that no matter what, there's always that little bit of 'I can't bloody wait for this to be in my CD player'. in centralstation [Para Ouvir/Samples]
