KOHNCKE, Justus - Safe & Sound

KOHNCKE, Justus - Safe & Sound (Kompakt Germany) Comentários: After the vocally-led Doppelleben, Justus Kohncke returns to more conventional floor-filling tactics on Safe And Sound, his latest full-length for Kompakt. Presumably it was the invention of his more song-based alter ego as Kinky Justice that led to this separation, something which long-term fans are likely to welcome with open arms. Opener 'Yacht' is restrained, perhaps even a little tentative, drawing out panoramic ambient textures against a mid-tempo groove. The production seems to flesh out in a linear fashion, snowballing its way to a silky conclusion, softened by deep, melodic pad textures. 'Molybdan' is more direct, dipping a toe into more of a disco sound, with plenty of synth funk and carefully judged filtering, resulting in an arrangement that's slightly retro, without resorting to kitsch. The metallic, panning delays and subdued rhythms of 'Tilda' represents an even greater mood swing from the days of Doppelleben, plotting out a kind of funky Pop Ambient sound. Speaking of 'funky', 'Parage' illuminates the album's second half with some more disco sounds, this time far more steeped in old fashioned dancefloor values, complete with seventies string samples and early nineties-style piano stabs. There is one lapse into vocals, on '(It's Gonna Be) Alright', but you can let Kohncke off the hook given the dark, jacking echo squelches of '$26' and 'Spukhafte Fernwirkung's spacious soundscaping. Justus is served. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples] [MySpace]
