AUTECHRE - Quaristice

AUTECHRE - Quaristice (Warp germany) Comentários: Autechre’s first album in nearly three years will probably take nearly that long to sink in, but my first impression is pure pleasure. The opening track, “Altibzz,” teases with warm synths seemingly played live. I liken it to the first sip of hot tea—very satisfying. “The Plc” is electro on speed. Each note is quirky in some way. About two-thirds of the way through it breaks down into digitized laughter, then snippets of a familiar hip-hop sample. “IO” crunches what sounds like a news reporter through robotic processing. A few of the tracks seem more experimental than musical. At first, “Simmm” reminds me of a gamelan. The sounds ride a razor’s edge between pluck and percussion. Then more and more of them build, almost randomly until the inevitable break-down, in this case chunks of panning bass. The notes on “paralel Suns” sink as reverb increases, dragging the hapless listener into whale-song depths. Listening to “Fol3,” I imagine a video game where players throw huge, crumbling, blocks of pixels at each other. Other cuts remind me of an earlier era. On “rale,” electronics groan like branches rubbing together over a boom-chick beat. I know I’ve heard those chords before. On “90101-5l-l,” Autechre construct a glitchy groover from squelches and phasers. “Theswere” is wonderfully melodic but painfully brief, while “chenc9” evokes the style of LP 5. “Notwo” is lovely deep ambience. “Outh9X” builds slowly and beat-lessly with fascinating bass. Even after nine albums and an equal number of EPs, Autechre’s Brown and Booth are full of fresh ideas. It feels like the varied electronic sounds here grew into place just so. Each part is perfectly placed, like a flower arrangement that would be ruined with even the slightest change. in gridface [Para Ouvir/Samples]

Klaus Schulze - Moondawn (1976)

ZOMBY - Mush

ZOMBY - Mush (Hyperdub) Comentários: Big 12" alert. Yet another new signing to the stellar hyperdub roster, Zomby joins the fold with the massive 'Mush' backed up with the most anticipated remix for a long time, Rustie tackling the anthemic 'Spliff dub'. Surprisingly Zomby has only released one full track proper, the aforementioned 'spliff dub' anthem for Heavy Artillery, but as any followers of this game will know, the man has dubs for days and finally Hyperdub do the good thing and get some on wax. 'Mush' takes definite cues from the more spangled side of the dubstep world, instead of relying on hackneyed dub samples Zomby can easily be considered next to the likes of Various or Ikonika for forward thinking melodic developments and a far wider sonic scope than the rest of his peers, utilising cellos and a skilled production pallette to knock up a riddim that stands head and shoulders above the rest. That said, he can't help but be usurped by the awesome Rustie mix of 'Spliff dub' on the flip. The Wegie rascal turns the original's dancehall vibes into a technicolour synth ridden monster, retaining the original "one spliff a day' refrain but transforming it into a far wonkier beast. Once again, you just can't fault hyperdub's A+R skills here, picking up on the absolute cutting edge of British dancefloor electronics with two of the scenes brightest young talents. SEBASTIEN TELLIER - Sexuality (Lucky Number)

FIELD, The - Sound Of Light

CONNIE PRICE & THE KEYSTONES - Tell Me Something

CONNIE PRICE & THE KEYSTONES - Tell Me Something (Ubiquity) Comentários: Anyone judging Connie Prince and The Keystones on their name might assume that they’re a retro soul act in the vein of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. In fact they actually make a high-quality blend of raw funk and hip hop vocals and only have two main members — neither of them called Connie. These two members mix live funk and soul with incredible guest rappers and vocalists to produce music that is truly stunning. Any album that opens with the legendary Big Daddy Kane spitting lyrics like he’s still a hungry young MC, as this does with ‘Across The Board’, is bound to make an impact. His rhymes are perfectly matched to the down-tempo funk groove that Dan Ubick & Todd M. Simon (the men behind the Connie Prince and The Keystones concept) create. Wailing guitars, dramatic strings and crystal clear horns all combine to make it seem like you’re listening to a lost cut from Isaac Haye’s Shaft soundtrack, with Kane taking Hayes’ place as vocalist. In many ways the rest of Tell Me Something struggles to live up to the standard set by ‘Across The Board’, but that’s not to say that it’s not great; it’s just that the bar is set so high by Big Daddy Kane that almost anything would feel like a bit of a let-down after that. Having said that, Aloe Blacc provides wonderful vocals on ‘Tell Me’; his more traditional singing style recalls The Cinematic Orchestra, but doesn’t fall into the maudlin tone that act has adopted recently due to the sheer joy of the soul backing. The only totally instrumental track, ‘Hoagies Revenge’, is a wonderful racket — all Hammond organ and Fred Wesley style horns, but the lack of rapping or singing means that it’s difficult to differentiate it from a host of other modern soul acts. Luckily the quality vocals are soon back in force with ‘Master At Work’ featuring Ohmega Watts being a particular case in point; the way his smooth, intelligent raps sit perfectly with the funk backing proves once more that it’s a global disgrace that Watts isn’t a huge star. For those familiar with Ohmega Watt’s brilliance, the fact that Ubiuity Records has a habit of releasing amazing albums will come as no surprise and therefore the news that Tell Me Something by Connie Price and The Keystones is another such piece of work is unlikely to come as a shock. Meanwhile the rest of the world will be in for a very nice surprise if this album has even a fraction of the success it deserves. in flyglobalmusic [Para Ouvir/Samples]

HOPKINS, Clutchy - Walking Backwards

HOPKINS, Clutchy - Walking Backwards (Ubiquity) Comentários: Don't ask me who Clutchy Hopkins is; I don't know. There's a line of people waiting to learn his whereabouts. If you find out, perhaps you will be kind enough to hand over the contact info for the mysterious trickster, folklore guru, and marvelous musician. Because of his anonymity, this won't be your average press release. I don't have any of the usual stuff: no insight into his background, no list of influences or interesting anecdotes about his musical upbringing. Instead, what follows is the abbreviated version of how this album came to be by way of thrift store finds, red herrings, a pizza parlor, and a list of characters long enough to cast a b-movie.I can tell you that this album might as well be the crackly soundtrack to a vintage spaghetti western crossed with a 70s porno. Rickety breaks n'beats and busted keyboard sounds pop out against lush strings, while a collection of guitars and mandolins strum alongside old-school synthesizers. Some tunes are hypnotic and build around a droning rumble or relentless chords while others are driving or change up to reveal new intentions. It's an eerie blend of dusty-bar blues, mariachi soul and hard times funk that sounds like it was recorded in a backyard shack somewhere remote, in a small town where kids throw stones at each other for fun.By strange coincidence label-mate Darondo is on one track, while Shawn Lee and Todd Simon (Connie Price and The Lions) were also dragged into the proceedings to complete the album. We're not exactly sure how these collaborations came to be; we're just relieved to have a finished copy.We first became interested in releasing new tunes by Hopkins when we discovered reel-to-reel tapes, marked "C.H.", at the Bargain Town Thrift Store in the Mojave Desert. A chance encounter with a woman who claimed to have once owned the tapes led us to The Misled Children, supposed messengers of Hopkins. This long-haired, note scribbling, double talking duo came by the Ubiquity office and, after drinking our fridge dry, made a deal to deliver an album's worth of Hopkins tunes. They gave us two tracks and then, over the course of a year, sent a dead pigeon, a half-empty jigsaw puzzle, and a purple v-neck sweater. No album appeared in the post. Eventually, a napkin from Mama C's Restaurant arrived in an envelope. On it was written "Go see Johnny Brooklyn at Valentino's Pizza Place; he has your music, creep." At the back table, Mr. Brooklyn was waiting, album master in hand. We never heard from the Misled Children again, although we've been told they've been sending rude notes to Shawn Lee.Prior to our release, an album called 'Who is Clutchy Hopkins' was made available in short supply. A further CD surfaced, featuring an apparent collaboration between Hopkins and MF Doom. On closer inspection, this was a collection of rare Doom joints backed with new Hopkins' music.Since we made our intentions known to distribute more Hopkins material, we've been contacted by people who claim to have known, spotted, slept with, smoked, or gone through life-changing events with him. To these people, we apologize. We can't help put you in touch. We're just as in the dark as you. We hope you like the album. Keep an eye on www.ubiquityrecords.com or www.youtube.com/ubiquityrecords for Clutchy sightings, movies and interviews.*FYI - The second disc of this 2 CD set will include taped confessionals, interviews and archived footage of Mr Hopkins, collected from various sources and anonymously mailed packages.Yours sincerely, Andrew Jervis, A+R, Ubiquity Recordings, Inc. GLASS CANDY - Beatbox

GLASS CANDY - Beatbox (Italians Do It Better) Comentários: Initially available as a tour-only release, this album-length CD features nine tracks by stars of Italians Do It Better, Glass Candy. There's a wealth of new material on the disc, with only a couple of tracks having appeared in some form beforehand. The band's reworking of Kraftwerk's 'Computer Love' and the summery, retro disco of 'Rolling Down The Hills' have been given the re-recording treatment, having already showed up in different versions on the super hip After Dark compilation. The duo's Italo-influenced sound is in fine form on B/E/A/T/B/O/X, with vocalist Ida No bringing some much needed personality to the genre, while Johnny Jewel (these probably aren't even their real names are they?) lays down some great synth passages on 'Last Nite I Met A Costume' and the slow funk of 'Candy Castle'. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples] [Try It]

Nowadays Twitch and Wilkes are a bit of a roadshow, too, taking Optimo to Japan, New York, Europe as well as around the UK to spread the Glasgow love around. [Web Site] [Download]

JAVAANSE JONGENS, De - PS

JAVAANSE JONGENS, De - PS (Kindred Spirits Holland) Comentários: Kindred Spirits continues it’s Nod Navigator series with the new Javaanse Jongens beat E.P. 10 Bangers!!!Around 1997 ‘De Javaanse Jongens’ got to know each other. Due to their different backgrounds they were very open-minded to different kinds of music which resulted in a broad taste and interest of music styles and everything which was directly connected to that. This passions and love for music was the base of their friendship and by this ‘De Javaanse Jongens’, Dutch for ‘the guys from Java’, decided to form a collective which isn’t bound to one specific sound, but in which variation of sounds and grooves is king. Consisting out of four young guys: Wan Kei-You, Jay Bordeaux, Ruben Rahametwau and Louis Bordeaux, who recently released it’s debut LP on Appletree Records, JJ keeps it rocking with 10 banging tracks on this E.P. From heavy thumping drumlines to soulful rhythms with deep vocals it’s all here, so play it, experience it, nod your head to it and feel the versatility.. The next Javaanse Jongens project might be different because it’s like JJ says “Variation spices up life! So we love to flip around our sound and keep evolving..” in rushhour [Para Ouvir/Samples]

ATLAS SOUND - Let The Blind Lead Those Who See But Cannot Feel

ATLAS SOUND - Let The Blind Lead Those Who See But Cannot Feel (Kranky US) Comentários: The much talked about solo album from Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox, Atlas Sound's "Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel" is an electronically-geared songwriter album done right. Possibly for the first time since Khonnor's debut album a few years back an artist has successfully embraced the sound palette offered by their laptop and made a coherent collection of experimentally minded pop outings. It's all too easy to find yourself distracted by the blogging circus that surrounds Bradford Cox. This is afterall a man who kept a tour diary dedicated to his bowel movements (with chilling photographic evidence included), and caused no end of controversy via his publication of dubious pornographic images on that same Deerhunter blog (not to mention the feud with Samara Lubelski...). It was this sort of nonsense that contributed to the departure of the band's guitarist Colin Mee, so the prospect of Cox holding together an impressive solo outing was hardly something to be taken for granted. Fortunately, all baggage has been checked and you're left with fourteen slices of fluently assembled electronics and dream-pop melodies. 'A Ghost Story' ushers in the album with a potent mixture of Panda bear-like soundscaping with an archive recording of a small child recounting a spooky tale. This kind of more abstract composition reappears throughout the album, holding together 'On Guard', 'Winter Vacation' and the vast, swooping title track, all in a vein similar to Kompakt's Pop Ambient series. The dominant force here though is Cox's knack for penning rewired indie rock, as typified by the immense 'Quarantined' and 'River Card' - it's almost enough to overshadow his Deerhunter day job. Excellent. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

SANTOGOLD - Creator

SANTOGOLD - Creator (Downtown US) Comentários: Santogold (out of Brooklyn NYC) has teamed up with producers like Switch, FreQNasty, Naeem (Spankrock), Disco D, and XXXchange for her forthcoming solo album. The handful of tracks that have already surfaced definitely showcase her versatility and talent as a vocalist, as well as a nice range of production styles and influences. Santi began with her rock band Stiffed in 2001 making new wave tinged punk/ska. From what I gather Stiffed eventually split and Santi has since gone on with her solo career after hooking up with Lizard King records (most known for signing The Killers). While the backbone of her sound remains rooted in her punk/reggae past, her music is about as new sounding and exciting as pop gets right now! We cant wait for more and I cant wait to start hearing it on the floor. in bigstereo [Para Ouvir/Samples1] [2]

Michael Jackson - Thriller (25th Anniversary Edition) (2008)

Beat It, Billie Jean são outras músicas transportadas no tempo para o novo cd. in siga cafe [Experimenta/Try It]

JAMES T. COTTON - Like No One

JAMES T. COTTON - Like No One (Spectral) Comentários: Like No One. Quite a statement to make, but when you can back it up like this who can argue? After pretty much mastering any genre he's had a crack at, Tadd Mullinx, the beardy fella behind the Dabrye, SK1 and Starsky and Clutch monikers returns to his acid playtime project with pals from the Creme Jak excursions, Melvin Oliphant (Saturn V/the Dirty Criminals) and D'Marc Cantu (2AM/FM) well up for the session. Mullinx breathes some humid air into his vast array of drum machines with an intuitive knack for rhythmatic progression and respect for the acid progenitors from Phuture to Armando, in a genre so crowded with dilettantes JTC is the real deal, no doubt. On 'The second cycle, JTC is joined by Ellis Monk on providing the ascencial (sic) chord progressions over JTC's raw jackbeats. 'The Boxx' pays homage to that devilish little machine known as the TB 303, with a virtuoso display of licks and bites, funkifying pure electrical current into terrifying dancefloor commands. The Saturn V collab is as fierce as anything on their awesome Creme Jak 12"s, while the 2AM/FM collab trips out into John Carpenter with a slow strobe territory. Absolutely sick stuff, ESSENTIAL PURCHASE! in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

SPARRO, Sam - Black & Gold

SPARRO, Sam - Black & Gold (Island) Comentários: Smooth, sexy, poppy and just damn good fun sums up Sam Sparro’s new EP, Black & Gold. Blending rock and funk with disco savvy, Sparro knows how to keep a party going with these six songs. It’s just a shame he doesn’t have more music coming out for a full release, as this E.P. ends far too quickly. Eighties style Prince guitars blend with drum beats and Sam’s synthesized voice in “S.A.M.S.P.A.R.R.O.” It’s a soft start that leads us into the party where he ratchets things up with “Black & Gold”. It’s difficult to describe this song; if you take some Michael Jackson with Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and a little Al Green, you get some idea of what’s going on here. It’s smooth, sexy, and impossible not to dance to. If you’re looking for deep lyrics, Sparro isn’t the place to look. “Cottonmouth” brings out the soul for an ode to being parched. There is an underlying environmental theme, but it’s very subtle. If you miss the one line, you’d never know. “Cling Wrap” continues the party and the booty shaking good times. Who can’t relate to an overly clingy person? From the silly to the serious, “Miss Rexi” takes a moment to tackle anorexia. Of course, it’s all done to a serious dance track. Sparro’s suave vocals handle the topic about as well as an intervention hosted by the girls from Sunset Tan. I’m not sure when trying to convince someone with body image issues to gain weight by telling them you “want to fatten them up”, and that some people “really love a bit of fat” is the best way to go. Shallowness aside, Black & Gold is a party pleaser. Sam Sparro knows music and has created six wicked tunes that will be a hit at any gathering. This is one sleek, sexy, futuristic bit of electro-funk pop that delivers. in popsyndicate [Para Ouvir/Samples]

Hercules & Love Affair

Hercules and Love Affair, the new disco throwback project of Andrew Butler is about to get a full-length release on DFA Records. The album will be preceded by the single, ‘Blind,’ a track which features Hegarty’s uniquely masculine/feminine vocals. DEGO/VARIOUS - 4 Hero Mixing

DEGO/VARIOUS - 4 Hero Mixing (Sonar Kollektiv) Comentários: Compiled and mixed by Dego, this new Sonar Kollektiv compilation follows on from previous instalments in the Mixing series from Jazzanova and Ame. This disc serves as a map of 4Hero's formative influences, incorporating old funk, reggae and disco classics, while always keeping one foot firmly planted in the now, featuring more contemporary cuts from Dabrye, Waajeed and Georgia Anne Muldrow. After opening on Bootsy Collins, it's not long before Dego finds his way to segueing from J Dilla into Raymond Scott - not a manoeuvre you'd hear often, but it's a splendid connection to make nonetheless. As the mix enters its second half we shift from Scientist into The Skatelites, then onto Patrice Rushen's grandiose disco anthem 'Message In The Music', all carried off with an incredibly fluid aplomb. Clocking in at a conservative forty-two minutes or so, this is a good deal more concise than your average mix CD, but it manages to cover an awful lot of ground while never feeling overstuffed, and that is most certainly an admirable quality. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples] [Download] password: enmixed.com

KLIMA - Klima

KLIMA - Klima (Peacefrog) Comentários: London-based French vocalist Angele David-Guillou has previously made appearances on recordings by Piano Magic and the duo Ginger Ale, but this eponymous debut delivers the powerful simplicity of her voice in full force. Klima's music frames that voice in swathes of electronics as well as more conventional instruments (predominantly electric guitar), calling upon the mixing and production talents of Laika's Guy Fixsen and Piano Magic's Jerome Tcherneyan respectively. Angele is also joined by Psapp's Gwen Cheeseman, who provides the strings on the album - it's quite the who's who of indietronica. Of all the tracks here, 'Neverending' is the most impressive piece of production, the swooping strings and distorted backing vocals are a clear venture into Bjork's territory with marching electronic beats directly referencing the Icelandic pop queen's 'Hunter'. 'Lady of The Lake' is similarly elaborate, the otherwise upbeat arrangement cloaked in a misty reverberation that darkens things up nicely. In fact, much of the album is sewn together from fragments of electronic instrumentation and grandiose strings, but it's the remarkably straight-forward 'Fluorescent Stars' that provides possibly the most instant, most memorable song on the album: it's a combination of bare electric guitar arpeggios and a wordless vocal hook that proves to be the most emotive moment here. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

BARON ZEN - At The Mall (remixes)

JACKMATE - Male Kicks

JACKMATE - Male Kicks (Philpot Germany) Comentários: Limited to 800 coloured vinyl - purple transparent!!After last years successfull “Blackbox” album on our phil e-divison and the “Interspherical Tensions” ep on “Freude-am-Tanzen", The Jacker is back on Philpot with his second 12inch “Male Kicks". The follow-up of “Male Isms” which was released in 2004 comes along with two variations of the track “Gothan", a timeless Deephouse track and its beatless dub version. The main title “Male Kicks” is an upbuilding funky Techno track that starts with African tribal sounds and smooth percussion before it twists into a stormer...the subtle effect of different layers of drums and chords generates an atmosphere far away from being just a tool...for those who know! in mbeat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

ADELE - 19

ADELE - 19 (XL) Comentários: Pitching up somewhere between blues, folk and jazz, she's included something for everyone without ever pandering to a particular trend. Her melodies exude warmth, her singing is occasionally stunning and, in the dramatic Hometown Glory, the spiky cool of Cold Shoulder (which is unexpectedly reminiscent of Shara Nelson-era Massive Attack) and the piano epic Make You Feel My Love, she has tracks that make Lily Allen and Kate Nash sound every bit as ordinary as they are. That said, there is a note of caution to be sounded. There's a danger of the hyperbole exceeding the actual potential here: The Brit Awards made her their first ever winner of the Critics' Choice award and the BBC's Sound of 2008 list named her as the most promising new music talent in UK, while one magazine compared her songbook with Leonard Cohen's! While she is undoubtedly good, she's not quite worthy of those accolades yet, as her voice lacks a little soul and her songwriting a little depth. Adele is a fine prospect and a genuine talent, but just like Amy Winehouse, who went to the same performing arts school, her brilliance will truly shine when she's a little further into her career – though hopefully, she'll be better at handling the astronomical fame that awaits her than the crumbling Mrs Fielder-Civil. 19 is a great start, a solid base to build a career on and a wonderful reminder of just how great our home grown talent can be. Just goes to show that the old adage is true – you really can't go judging a pop star by their cover. in bcc [ParaOuvir/Samples]

Tokion’s Revisionaries Out Now!

Art, like history, has been revised a million times over, by artists and critics, audiences and collectors and everyone else that has come into contact with art. Sometimes it’s necessary to revise–when things get bad, or even just cliché, a new way of seeing things must arise. Tokion has consistently attempted to work with artists that see the problems with a new outlook, and work hard for change. This is what makes our first book, Revisionaries, published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., so special. We here at Tokion are mighty proud to announce that Revisionaries: A Decade of Art in Tokion is at all fine booksellers now. We’ve gathered together 82 (!) of our favorite artists who we’ve worked with over the past ten years–artists like Ryan McGinness, Swoon, Andrew Jeffery Wright, Chris Johanson, Elisabeth Arkhipoff, David Shrigley, Marcel Dzama, Os Gemeos, Tomoo Gokita and Paper Rad–and cataloged them into one exciting collection of the artists’ stunning works and short interviews with them. The book reads like a yearbook of artists who we’re proud to consider friends of Tokion. [Oficial Site]

TESLASONIC - Hidden Secret Space

TESLASONIC - Hidden Secret Space (Minimal Rome Italy) Comentários: Another installment with raw rocking analogue electro tracks from the MR camp. Very well produced 5 track ep with a lot of nice melodies and robotic vocoder vox. It's a very suitable mixture of darker wave like tracks and the more scientific sounds that go more towards the aquatic electro territories that we all love so much. ASHKEN, Marc - Have You Seen My Dancing Shoes? (Vinyl Sampler)

ASHKEN, Marc - Have You Seen My Dancing Shoes? (Leftroom) Comentários: "Have You Seen My Dancing Shoes" is Marc's debut album on Leftroom. It is a collection of tracks and skits taken from a period of 6 months where his whole focus was on this project. There is a mix of house, breakbeat, techno, minimal and downtempo. Marc writes the music for all the instruments, all the vocals are sung by Marc, and the engineering and production is all from him. We hope you get lost in it as much as we have. nota do editor [Para Ouvir/Samples]

PLANNINGTOROCK

PLANNINGTOROCK is the moniker of musician and video artist Janine Rostron. Planningtorock fuses all of Rostron's talents into a dazzling audiovisual presentation that borrows from classical music, glam rock, stunning imagery, and hip-hop. A classically trained violinist, Rostron moved from England to Berlin in the early '00s and the Planningtorock character first appeared in 2004. PTR live shows blur the boundaries between a conventional music concert and performance art in which Rostron, aided by several props and an assortment of “character” helmets, interacts with her psychadelic, kaleidoscopic video personas. BENJAMIN BRUNN - Konig Und Drache

BENJAMIN BRUNN- Konig Und Drache (Bine Music Germany) Comentários: This is one of those releases you stumble across more or less by accident and end up getting completely overtaken by its simple complexity and goosebump-inducing beauty. Released on the Raster-Noton sponsored "Bine" imprint, "Konig Und Drache (king and dragon) explores a sort of effortlessly organic blend of microscopically crunchy House music and night-time glowing loveliness, most often bringing to mind Jan Jelinek's work as Farben but considerably less focused on those signature jazz-loops and samples. The depth of field here is widened by virtue of Brunn's innate melodic responses and wide open instincts for bridging squashed 4/4 beats and effervescent melodic underlays with an incredible ability to involve. His childhood dabbling with classical Piano playing comes across through these often resolutely percussive tracks, as does his cross-cultural background (roots in both Dresden and Taiwan) - something which lends this incredible album an air of both determination and introspection. A quiet masterpiece of an album that comes with a huge recommendation - immediate listening required. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

A NUMBER OF NAMES - Sharevari

A NUMBER OF NAMES - Sharevari (Capriccio) Comentários: Paul Lesley and Jones (childhood friends who formed the creative nucleus of A Number of Names) and crew took a demo version of their new song, “Sharevari,” down to the Mojo. That and a few advance plays at the party clubs earned the song a massive reputation. By the time it dropped in 1981, it was already a classic. It has since been regarded as the first Detroit techno record, lost to obscurity until Keith Tucker and his Puzzlebox Records rediscovered these gentlemen and got them to participate in the DEMF 2001. The birth of techno - Revolutions come from the strangest places, and Detroit techno is no exception. Finding roots in the burgeoning Detroit party club scene, the aesthetics of the future were born out of forward-thinking high-school kids of the late ’70s and early ’80s. These select few were looking for a flavor of an exotic nature; these kids created their own scene outside of existing club life. Lesley remembers, “We never felt like youth trapped in Detroit. We felt like we already had worldly experiences, even though we were still in high school.” Party clubs such as Direct Drive, Charivari (from the name of a New York clothing store, later changed for the song title) and Capriccio existed not in specific venues, but in exclusive areas with parties that paid attention to every detail, laying the groundwork for the techno revolution to come. Emphasis was placed on atmosphere: special locations (ranging from big backyards to ballrooms with all the seats taken out — you had to dance), sound systems (as loud as they could play it), skilled DJs, lighting, people dressed up in GQ, purple pants and New Wave sunglasses. Style was everything. “Sharevari”’s really it Deciding to unite the party crews and galvanize the scene, ANON set out to make their anthem. The song, “Sharevari,” according to Lesley “was about the quintessential guy from that scene.” The construction of the song was influenced largely by DJs, with the feeling that you’re listening to multiple records being mixed. The chorus most clearly shows the party-mix influence: the way the vocals repeat like a DJ rocking doubles, the multitude of keyboard lines. “Sharevari” was Detroit’s first electronic record to respond to what the DJ added to the music, laying the groundwork for generations to come. in metrotimes [Para Ouvir/Samples]
