LOCO DICE - 7 Dunham Place

LOCO DICE - 7 Dunham Place (Desolat Germany) Comentários: Düsseldorf DJ, producer and Desolat label head Loco Dice will release his debut album this May. Dice began his career as a hip-hop DJ, but in 2002 hooked up with producer Martin Buttrich and warmed up to dance music in a major way, leading to releases on high-profile labels like Minus, Cadenza and Cocoon. For his first full-length, Dice relocated from his Düsseldorf home to New York City and rented out a studio space with Buttrich, taking inspiration from the new surroundings. From the lovely architecture (’Got Leaks in the Roof’) to inefficient public transport (’M Train to Brooklyn’), Dice explores the city that never sleeps via what the press notes call “reduced grooves, kept infinitely personal.” in ra [Para Ouvir/Samples]

LEILA - Mettle

LEILA - Mettle (Warp) Comentários: LIMITED, DELUXE AND HAND NUMBERED NEW VINYL EDITION - LIMITED TO 500 COPIES FOR THE WORLD AND INCLUDING EXTRA MATERIAL!* Tape's second album manages to outclass their debut offering 'Opera' by building up their uniquely passioned embrace of the world of live acoustic instrumentation. Tape is a trio from Stockholm, Sweden, building their music from a whole array of acoustic instruments, subtle electronics and field recordings. This eight track album manages to combine warm sonics with a slight abstract angle seemingly without any effort at all through the use of banjo, violin, organ, harmonium, accordion, harmonica and trumpet (plus around 10 other exotic instruments). To spotlight individual tracks is not necessary it's the joy you'll arrive at through listening to this album from start to finish that'll really make you fall in love with this CD. At time joyful and at others sadly beautiful, bringing to mind the aura of Mark Hollis' post Talk Talk debut album from 1998. I really can't recommend this album highly enough. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

DER ZYKLUS - Cherenkov Radiation

DER ZYKLUS - Cherenkov Radiation (Frustrated Funk Holland) Comentários: Sci-fi electro darkness from Der Zyklus. Moody, pinpoint accurate lazer beats and synth basslines accompanied by swooshing lead lines and melodies plus arpeggios to die for. You can hear the horror influences and there's a hint of Zombi in some of the string bits. 4 tracks of mutant funk. 4 really good reasons to get yourself a copy of this. Brilliant in my opinion. in smallfish [Para Ouvir/Samples] [Myspace]

DCAST DYNAMICS - The Giant Returns (Frustrated Funk Holland) Comentários: I actually though I'd put on a Other People Place record when I first stuck this on. It's got that sort of electro / techno hybrid vibe with a mid-tempo feel and these lovely string elements, all backed up with synthy old basslines. Frustrated Funk can put stuff like this out all the time in my opinion as this is one of my favourite releases so far (along with the Der Zyklus 12"). in smallfish [Para Ouvir/Samples] [Myspace]

INVISIBLE CONGA PEOPLE - Weird Pains

An electronic stream of consciousness. A ceremonial meditation. A haunting premonition. These are all phrases and descriptions that come to my mind when listening to "Cable Dazed" by NYC's Invisible Conga People, the newest band on the otherwise dark disco label Italians Do It Better. Similar to the Knife's song "Silent Shout," it's a tranced-out, mystical piece with dead-pan vocals and a backing track that rarely deviates off course. The difference lies in "Cable Dazed's" more stripped down approach, which to me, adds a greater air of mystery. in the walrus Listen to more Invisible Conga People tracks on their MySpace Page

George Pringle - Carte Postale

Oxford-based George Pringle began writing music when she was 16. She pinched her older brother’s guitar and taught herself bar chords. Her brother ... (more) ditched the guitar to become a DJ. “I don’t see the point of making music when I’m not doing anything new and other people can do it so much better than me. I enjoy listening to them far more,” he said. George has become a “Diseuse” (a female performer of monologues). She makes electronic music on her iBook G4 (which she calls Truman) and recites poetry over the tracks. Her demos have been described as "just plain charming!" by Music Week.George gigs Karaoke-style, with a view to someday incorporating projections of her photo journals into her live shows. MAX HATTLER - Collision

"To note the five long years that the Iraq campaign has chalked up this month, what better way to mark the occasion than with Max Hattler's protean, prize-laden and thought-provoking animated artwork. This abstract reflection on the clash of cultures forcibly merges American quilts and Islamic patterns into beautiful, yet unsettling kaleidoscopic scenes. Make sure to launch this in the stand-alone player option and listen with headphones on (bbc.co.uk/ filmnetwork), to see how Christopher Wilson's subtly ominous sound mix transforms these whirling, warring images, as a muezzin's call and the crack of artillery fire fracture Hattler's primary- coloured mandalas like shrapnel." guardian.co.uk, 3/2008

THEFASHIONRAMONE

Narziß celebrated clandestinely, *and misanthropically*, the after party of 101TOKYO 2008, the city's brand new international contemporary art fair. We reminded everybody that "Hell Is Other People", Sartre´s famous quote that even physically accompanied us all night long. The majority -most of all the artists- though, took it too seriously, judging by the self-exile at the eremitic Indigo's VIP area. Among the audience were the photographer Lolo from Johannesburg, TFR's image Nakao, fashion maison G.V.G.V's designer Magu, Narziß's image Sono, and 101TOKYO's director Agatha Wara, who cordially granted us leave to use 101TOKYO as a tool for social demoralization. Wishmountain - Wishmountainisdead (1998)

Wishmountain - Wishmountainisdead (Antiphon) Comentários: Wishmountain is Dead is indeed Wishmountain’s last hurrah. After several singles on the much missed Universal Language Productions label, this compilation shows Herbert’s penchant for taking sounds from everyday objects and making music from them. Hence, tracks like “Pepperpot,” “Jam Jar,” and “Crisps” are self-explanatory in terms of the objects used. “Bottle” takes the basic sounds and transforms them into something like ‘pop’ music, while “Salad Tosser” becomes a rhythmic clatter. “Royal Wedding,” on the other hand, abstracts the vows from the marriage of Prince Charles and Diana until they finally rectify themselves at the end. “The Cough,” co-produced by Global Communication, takes their musical sensibility and merges it with the cough samples. The final track, “Rose,” is pure ambient bliss. It’s a wonderful collection of Wishmountain’s groundbreaking work, which paved the way for much of modern IDM. in discogs

BOCHUM WELT - ROB (Robotic Operating Buddy)

BOCHUM WELT - ROB (Robotic Operating Buddy) (Rephlex) Comentários: is one of the best Rephlex releases in recent years. It would have been nice if disc one features some more original pieces, and a 4LP version would have been a real treat; but despite these meager complaints R.O.B. is a triumph. Disc one gives the electronic audience new tracks created by an artist whose sound has never been reproduced. Bochum Welt is a master of warm analogue electronics, with the first CD offering the listener an array on unheard gems. Disc two is emblematic of why Rephlex has become the label it is, amazing works that sound as fresh today as they did when they first hit the shelves over ten years ago. For anyone contemplating the purchase of an electronic album, or throwing their headphones into the analogue arena, look no further than R.O.B. as disappointment is not included with this two disc set. in igloo [Para Ouvir/Samples] [Myspace]

KOHNCKE, Justus - Safe & Sound

KOHNCKE, Justus - Safe & Sound (Kompakt Germany) Comentários: After the vocally-led Doppelleben, Justus Kohncke returns to more conventional floor-filling tactics on Safe And Sound, his latest full-length for Kompakt. Presumably it was the invention of his more song-based alter ego as Kinky Justice that led to this separation, something which long-term fans are likely to welcome with open arms. Opener 'Yacht' is restrained, perhaps even a little tentative, drawing out panoramic ambient textures against a mid-tempo groove. The production seems to flesh out in a linear fashion, snowballing its way to a silky conclusion, softened by deep, melodic pad textures. 'Molybdan' is more direct, dipping a toe into more of a disco sound, with plenty of synth funk and carefully judged filtering, resulting in an arrangement that's slightly retro, without resorting to kitsch. The metallic, panning delays and subdued rhythms of 'Tilda' represents an even greater mood swing from the days of Doppelleben, plotting out a kind of funky Pop Ambient sound. Speaking of 'funky', 'Parage' illuminates the album's second half with some more disco sounds, this time far more steeped in old fashioned dancefloor values, complete with seventies string samples and early nineties-style piano stabs. There is one lapse into vocals, on '(It's Gonna Be) Alright', but you can let Kohncke off the hook given the dark, jacking echo squelches of '$26' and 'Spukhafte Fernwirkung's spacious soundscaping. Justus is served. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples] [MySpace]

Around the same time that Michigan’s Tadd Mullinix adopted his hip-hop oriented Dabrye alias, he also took on the acid-house nom de guerre James T. Cotton. With its playful use of female Chinese vocals, the first Cotton single Mind Your Manners became a favorite of DJs like Traxx, Deecoy, and Carlos Souffront. Not one to be pigeonholed, Cotton's work became darker with his heavy remix of Charles Manier's Bang Bang Lover and the monolithic EBM monster "I Seek" from Spectral Sound's State of the Union EP. The second proper Cotton EP Buck! is like a shot of caffeine, owing much to the sounds of classic techno and Belgian New Beat, and the Press Your Body EP paved the way for his dark and hypnotic debut full-length, The Dancing Box. In 2005, Cotton teamed up with D’Marc Cantu to create 2 AM/FM. Cotton is also one half of Saturn V along with Traxx, creating pieces that echo the heyday of Chicago jack, as well as a member of dark acid duo TNT with Todd Osborn. [Myspace] [Download]

Gosub: Live show MP3

Shad T Scott has been making music since the early days of Miami bass, techno and electro, growing up on a healthy diet of 95 South, 2 Live Crew, Jam Pony and others. Being a fan of this sound pushed Scott to want to learn how they made those sounds and tracks. Starting off as a very green studio assistant in the late eighties for local South Florida Studios, working with local hip hop and electro bass producers, Scott learned and sharpened his production skills to the point of being one of the top programmers in South Florida. HIEROGLYPHIC BEING aka JAMAL MOSS - The Bathroom Sessions Vol 1

HIEROGLYPHIC BEING aka JAMAL MOSS - The Bathroom Sessions Vol 1 (Mathematics US) Comentários: Chicago's avant-housemeister Jamal Moss returns to his Hieroglyphic Being guise for a raw-like-sushi acid jam session. Apparently recorded in his bathroom and pressed up in a super limited run of 250 for us lucky europeans, this sh*t really couldn't get any more nasty. Titled 'an audio memoir series 1-11' the tracks on offer are 11 of the purest uncut box jams we've heard in a long time, tweaking freaked 303 lines into abstract dance shapes with a little help from his mate Roland TR-707, Mr Moss is obviously in his element. The limitations of his machines simply force him to eak out the furthest flung frequencies he can find, resulting in a psychedelic and abstract trance like effect crying out to be deciphered by fresh ears. Much like his stylistic brethren James T Cotton, Jamal Moss has a marvelously intuitive connection with his boxes and bravely continues to jack out the jams on what are now simply archaic and vintage bits of kit, yet still managing to sound fiercer and more vital than 90% of the stuff that passes for dance music these days. For the true jack heads only - absolute CLASS. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

Uniquely qualified to write a new chapter of Chicago’s history, he does so with extreme vigor, wresting progress and vison out of a deep and spiritual love for the music. in phonica [Para Ouvir/Samples]

GATTO FRITTO - Bursting The Bubble

GATTO FRITTO - Bursting The Bubble (Electric Minds) Comentários: Electric Minds present Gatto Fritto for their 3rd release. A talented musician and producer from North London, he has been steadily building a reputation through his releases on London based Dissident. Extending his repertoire further he brings another quality production to Electric Minds. The A side “Bursting The Bubble” is a nine minute jam with quirky sync samples, heavy bass and a change in direction half way through the track which is becoming a trade mark of Gatto Fritto’s productions. The B side “Radio B-92” did not make its place on the first Electric Minds release as planned, so they were delighted to have been able to include it here. It is a sync rich track taking inspiration from New York’s 80’s electro scene, a perfect compliment to what is already a very strong 12” release. House heads as well as the cosmic fans will appreciate both productions. in wordandsound [Para Ouvir/Samples]

ZOOT WOMAN - Living In a Magazine | Automatic

i-D MAGAZINE - May Issue feat Agyness Deyn

Into the i-D office stomps model Agyness Deyn, dressed in leather baker boy cap, oversized men’s suit jacket, bondage trousers and sparkling white DM’s, her silver pistol pendant proudly on display. “HIYAAAA,” she shouts from reception before striding over and giving a hug and a kiss like the kind you receive from your bezzy mates. She sits on my desk and we take a look through the last few pictures shot for this special, one-off Agyness Deyn issue of i-D. Of course the first ones we open are the Nick Knight nudes. “AGHHHH” she screams, as we take in the full frontals, “Actually…” she pauses… “They are dead good, aren’t they?” Of course. Dedicating the past year to working on this issue, Agyness has been an inspiration from day one, bringing forth ideas, popping by for meetings, writing music reviews and generally being rather fabulous, fun and a pleasure to be around. Since inception to realisation, her stature and cultural significance has grown outside of the confines of the catwalk. She is the model of the moment, has bagged the London Fashion week cover of Grazia, appeared in the papers more often than a popstar, presented at top award shows, appeared on prime time UK chat show Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and scooped the cover of Time, whilst the brilliant website Perez Hilton describes her as “ferocious, diva, fierce” and “YUM!” All for a 25-year-old former chip shop worker from Rawtenstall in Manchester. For this issue Agyness had to endure shooting outside in the snow wearing just her knickers, driving a tank with full-on conjunctivitis, and throwing shapes atop a ladder in Westwood ball gown during the London hurricane. Chatting to my Mum back home in Wales the other day, she summed up Agyness’ appeal in an instant. “I saw her on the cover of Hello and thought ‘Ooh, I love the short style of her hair!’ She looks so different in the magazines, because of the way she dresses and she has such a pretty face. She’s got a lovely face… she stands out because she looks lovely!” in id
