TERESA RAMPAZZI - Immagini Per Diana Baylon (DIE SCHACHTEL) An eye-opening set of experimental electronic recordings made in the early 1970's by Italy's Teresa Rampazzi (1914-2001) - only the second collection of her work made available for public consumption - and an indispensible, crucial artefact if you're interested in the recordings of Daphne Oram, Tod Dockstader, Eliane Radigue or Delia Derbyshire.
As with the spellbinding Musica Endoscopica, this issue of Immagini Per Diana Baylon - one of her three known soundtracks for art installations - helps to place Teresa as Italy’s answer to Daphne Oram; that is, a pioneering female experimenter operating in a male dominated field since the ’50s, and an artist/musician/technician who was magnetically drawn to the emerging possibilities of analogue electronics (although she would also expand into computer composition as soon as the opportunity arose).
The 31’ 50” piece is cleft in two parts but was apparently intended to be looped for 180 minutes. Using analogue electronics as a malleable form or presence, like light itself, to subtly illuminate the pieces, and in turn create rich imagery in negative relief of the mind’s eye. The first side flows with an alien yet folksy, almost sing-song cadence, whereas the 2nd part really seems to conjure a more intense, head-long sort of e/motion from static sources, leading up to one remarkably sweet, harmonic passage that feels almost like a premonition of new age minimalism, before closing with a tract of needling, rapidly fluctuating timbres.
The coruscating, mirage-like sounds in Immagini Per Diana Baylon reflect a close understanding between both artist’s disciplines. As Teresa remarked in her notes; “The work is made of a series of sound events, with informal and aleatory features, in a continuous flux, and there is no planned predetermination in any of the various sections. This choice has been made for the sound space to adjust to the sculptor’s plastic and loose images.”
Diana’s anodised aluminium and iron on stone pieces, depicted in the accompanying insert, look to us like alien glyphs, aztec runes or debris from a space station that somehow managed to survive reentry to earth’s atmosphere, as Teresa agrees and expanded upon in 1974: “In her later artworks the objects of Diana Baylon are definitely taking flight - as if they has just gone through dense layers of atmosphere, as though they did so with the same intent… there are secret numerical ratios, symmetries not symmetrical, geometric shapes which escape the definitions of perception…”. That could arguably be a description of Teresa’s soundtrack, too.
This is definitely sound, or music, for art’s sake, as opposed to say the commercially-minded experiments of Suzanne Ciani over in America during the same era. Yet we can draw a line between the two via the balance of sleek sensitivity to timbre and austere geometry in Diana’s sculptures and Daphne Oram’s image-into-sound Oramics; a willingness and proclivity to explore synaesthetic relationships in a way which is nigh on impossible to articulate but which has provided this listener with goosebumps several times over.
Either way, it's is a recording of historical, experimental significance and a thing of great beauty - we urge you to investigate.

ADULT JAZZ - Earrings Off! (Tri Angle) Tri Angle welcome Adult Jazz to their pointy mass with Earrings Off!, which sounds about as close as you’ll get to Animal Collective riding a unicorn with Mica Levi and Antony outside of a Pitchfork writer’s wet dream... Appearing with their well received debut LP, Gist Is in 2014, the four-piece band were subsequently remixed by a gang of hot artists - Happa, Oliver Coates, Shabazz Palaces among them - before arriving at the attentions of Björk, whose affiliations with Tri Angle have no doubt prompted this hook up. Earrings Off! lands in a long-standing tradition of clever pop-not-pop, economically mixing queered Beach Boys vocal harmonies with contesting palettes of discordant strings, bittersweet electronics and nipped art-pop drums in deceptively awkward, intricate arrangements befitting of their experimental songs’ content about “masculinity. Embodiment, lust, idealisation, privilege, legitimacy and limitation… about the possibility of authenticity.”

JK Flesh x Surgeon - Nothing Is Free (Downwards) Black country overlord Justin K Broadrick (Jesu, Godflesh) blesses Regis’ Downwards fiefdom with two tracks and a tightly sprung rework by Surgeon. Downwards have really picked the foulest iterations of a grim set for vinyl release, inscribing the industrial-strength torque of Nothing Is Free - which sounds like early Kode 9 battered by Shapednoise - at 45rpm across the front face, and branding the knuckling 808 snares and distended electro bass blow out of Kontorted on its backside. Surgeon’s remix of the title tune ranks among his best in many years. Trace elements of the original are extruded thru modular kit and remodelled on a bouncing, swerving techno chassis recalling BMB and CUB classics, but streaked with sirens and vamped by a marching brass refrain that’s just spoiling for war. Cop it on Band Camp (originaly release in 2013 on Avalanche Recordings).

Yohji Yamamoto YY Srap Bball Mid White
Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto has teamed up with adidas to release a new sneaker collaboration, consisting of the YY STRAP BBALL HIGH and YY STRAP BBALL MID. Based on choice basketball silhouettes, the HIGH and its sole borrow inspiration from the adidas Top Ten 2000; the MID from the adidas Crazy 8. Presented here in white, feature an original upper design courtesy of Yamamoto, who furnished each pair in premium goat leather and installed a zip component at the back. Lolina (Inga Copeland) - Live In Paris (Unkown Label) Erstwhile Hype Williams provocateur, Inga Copeland’s 2nd release under the Lolina moniker is a live recording of her live A/V presentation for RBMA in Paris, 2015.
In situ, she was framed by a multi-screen projection of a monopoly board, perhaps best taken as an allegory for London stereotypes as viewed from her insider-outsider position as an Estonian-Russian artist embedded in the city’s multi-textural, poly-cultural fabric, and as comment on its socio-economic merry-don’t-go-round.
This soundtrack features a handful of tracks from her Relaxin’ With Lolina (2015) release, such as Relaxx and Lolina, plus I Am Your Ambient Wife from that Hyperdub ambient compilation. As far as we know, the rest are all unreleased, and include the piercing bongs of Time In EU, used as a similarly discomfiting signifier of Britihsness as Dean Blunt did on the Babyfather album, along with some plaggy Euro techno and a roll-call of LDN road names in Chance, whilst Wheel Up My Tune is a garish take on bashment, and our favourite, The Logic trades in a sort of discordant, lysergic psych sound.

VARIOUS : Der Zeltweg: Italian Tapes Industrial Music 1982-1984 Volume 2 (Mannequin Record) Record Store Day 2016.
Mannequin Records is proud to present the second volume of ‘Der Zeltweg – Italian Tapes Industrial Music 1982-1984′, the legendary Musumeci’s tape label existed for some few years in the early 80′s. Edition of 500 copies on 160 gram black vinyl. Coloured Vinyl.
While the A-side is filling all the music produced by some of their side projects (Errata-S-Corrige, Gasdehyde and Herpes-Z) that we already introduced in the first volume, plus an unreleased Musumeci very early studio track ‘Apologia/Musumeci’, the B-side is presenting for the first time the full reissue of ‘The Psychophatic Blossom – Il Fantasma della Libertà‘ tape (Der Zeltweg 002), an unexpected guitar-bass-noises experimental album, permeated by philosophical declamations in Italian language and short pulsating rhythmic compositions. For a brief moment Turin was Italy’s Sheffield, producing an astonishing number of DIY electronic groups. In the context of a wider Europe, Italy has never been thought of as a hotbed of minimal electronic music, but Mannequin Records compilations Danza Meccanica: Italian Synth Wave 1982-1987 have shone a light on a scene little heard, even within Italy’s borders. Inspecting all the bands we released in the past years, Musumeci represents one of the most rare and unknown. But..the reissue of the two super rare demo tapes that they recorded in 1985 (“Schwarz Morgen”) and in 1986 (“Zusammen”) and a 12” containing a couple of unreleased tracks plus a TRAXX edit, were just the beginning. Now the mission is terminated with the 2 volumes of ‘Der Zeltweg- Italian Tapes Industrial Music’.
