VARIOUS - Freedom Rhythm & Sound

VARIOUS - Freedom Rhythm & Sound: Revolutionary Jazz & The Civil Rights Movement 1963-82 Volume Two (Soul Jazz) Comentários: Soul Jazz Records are proud to present this amazing collection of sleeves from the deepest, deepest jazz music ever - compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records). This is a unique collection of cover artwork of revolutionary jazz music between 1965-83. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and the civil rights movement of the 1960s loom large as self-determination, economic power and musical freedom led to jazz artists finding new paths – both musical and economic. Years before the D-I-Y cultural revolution of punk, Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, the Art Ensemble of Chicago and others ‘took control’ of their own work by recording, releasing and distributing their own music themselves. The record sleeves of this era are as iconic and historically unique as the music itself and a striking reflection of the time; pre-desktop publishing, pre-internet these small-run (sometimes as low as 500 copies), self-made sleeves are graphically bold and radical. ‘Freedom, Rhythm and Sound’ is the first ever collection of this fascinating goldmine of album art, which represents the first wave of inspired independent production within popular music. ‘Freedom, Rhythm and Sound’ includes a large introduction contextualising the music and artwork as well as features on many of the people involved. Alongside the musicians mentioned above these include Rashied Ali, Steve Reid, Mary Lou Williams, Horace Tapscott, Lloyd McNeil, Tribe, The Last Poets, The Pharoahs, Philip Cohran, Black Artists Group and many others. HUSAYN, Shafiq - Shafiq En' A Free-Ka

HUSAYN, Shafiq - Shafiq En' A Free Ka - As a third of the Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Shafiq Husayn has produced some of the most acclaimed nu-soul spirit music of recent times, lending his sought-after cosmic vision to albums from John Legend, Erykah Badu and even Ice T. Now striding out on his own for a solo production - 'Shafi En' A-Free-Ka' - he can set the immediate commercial pressures of the trio aside for an album of free-spirited astral journeying, taking underground MC legend Count Bass D, vocalist Bilal Oliver and members of Build An Ark and Sa-Ra along for the experience. Shafiq takes a lot of cues from Sun-Ra over the course of the album, guiding him through seventeen tracks of jazz taught, soul soaked and hiphop bounced sounds using a huge array of engineers, players and like-minded cats to achieve his vision. It's arranged with the sense of a classic studio album in the tradition of Stevie Wonder or Sun-Ra, benefitting from the bristling ebullience of the assembled cast but never losing its cohesion or joyful theme, making it a pleasure to witness. The psyched West Coast pop harmonies of 'Major Heavy' features Sly Stone sound-alike Sonny Coates duetting with Count Bass D, while Om'Mas Keith and Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner make one of the highlights on 'Changes' with head swirling keys and wicked broken beat futurism. A highly recommended set to anyone who fell in love with 'The 4th World' or yearns for more Carlos Niño! in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

WRIGHT, Bernard - Nard

WRIGHT, Bernard - Nard (Bmg Japan) Comentários: A masterpiece of smooth jazzy funk -- and super-hip session headed up by the young keyboardist Bernard Wright! Wright's working here with an insider crowd of jazz funk players that includes Bobby Broom, Dave Grusin, Marcus Miller, and Don Blackman, whose funky style is very similar to Wright's. The record sort of picks up the groove where some of the Fantasy Records sessions of the 70s left off -- mixing together jazz and soul into a captivating blend that's made even better by Dave Grusin's tight production. And despite what you might think about the crap that Grusin headed up later in the 80s, the early days of the GRP label were amazing years for jazz funk. Includes Don Blackman's sample classic "Haboglabotribin", a nice version of Weldon Irvine's "Music Is The Key", and the cuts"Just Chillin' Out", "Master Rocker", and "Bread Sandwiches". Great all the way through, though -- and a record that still delights us year after year! in rushhour [Para Ouvir/Samples]

ILLUM SPHERE - Long Live The Plan

ILLUM SPHERE - Long Live The Plan (Fat City) Comentários: Progressing from his prophetic 'Incoming EP', Manchester's Illum Sphere raises his game with vinyl#1 of a 2-part album on the 'Long Live The Plan' EP, including a fat remix from Samiyam. Carving out his own brand of murky dystopia, the title track sets a scene of urbane moodiness with bladerunner-meets-Burial atmospherics, before 'Better Late State' actively fizzes with Flylo-styled 2-step rhythms and kinda surprisingly, the sort of haunting synths associated with AI era Black Dog or Ae. Meanwhile 'Psycho' meditates on a fat subs and eastern timbred percussion before our personal highlight 'Chasing The Midnight Moth' reconfigures dusty 2-step patterns with a hip-hopper's sense of shuffling swing. Samiyam brings matters to a close with the expanding synthline revision of 'Psycho', feeding the cut with rays of Ra-esque energy until it spills over with pure LA heat. With heads like Martyn and even Thom Yorke giving this fella nods of respect, we reckon it's fair time you did too if you're feeling Flylo, Dabrye, Burial or Bullion. We can't wait for part 2! in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

XENO & OAKLANDER - Sentinelle

Xeno and Oaklander are based in Brooklyn, NY. They began writing music in 2004. Miss Liz Wendelbo is French / Norwegian and Sean McBride is from Maryland. They record their songs live in their studio and play analogue synthesizers and instruments exclusively. Their second album "Sentinelle" was released last week and it is a interesting analogue experience, his low fi and 'weird' avant-garde aesthetic's are the perfect introduction to a darker dancefloor scenario, oriented for people like Beta Evers, John Maus, Mi Ami, Bubonic Plague, etc...

WHITE, Paul - Sounds From The Skylight

WHITE, Paul - Sounds From The Skylight (One Handed) Comentários: Sample collagist and master beats-craftsman Paul White provides an excellent 190track mini-album with the over-heavy 'Sounds From The Skylight' on the ever-impressive One Handed imprint. Practically anyone who heard his debut 'The Strange Dreams Of Paul White' was floored by its immense scope and B-Boy tailored narrative, staking a claim as the UK's answer to Madlib with another massive bag of slanted samples and deliciously dope breaks to cream your nuts. We're too scared to try and pick apart the wealth of samples embedded in White's grooves, but 'Ultra Violet' sounds like a Moog riff from Wendy Carlos' Beethoven versioning 'A Clockwork Orange' soundtrack over ten-tonne drum breaks, while on 'What's Good For Me' you'll find slick electro-soul rubbed into mind bending synth trips or on 'Alien Attack' Art Of Noise style blocks of found sound arranged for dramatic effect. This album is 19 tracks of pure sampledelic pressure, and it's surely no wonder why everyone from Channel 4 to Mary-Anne Hobbs and the Gaslamp Killer have been overflowing with praise for him for the last 18 months. An exhilarating listen - Highly Recommended! in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

LOSOUL - Slightly

LOSOUL - Slightly (Playhouse Germany) Comentários: Taken from his forthcoming 'Care' long player, 'Slightly/Gridlock' is the new and rather essential piece of wax from Playhouse's reliably brilliant Losoul. With all the attention around a "deep" resurgence in techno and house, meaning elevated levels of "soul", "funk" and musicianship it's easy to forget that characters like Losoul have been doing "deep" for their whole career. 'Slightly' is a truly groovy piece of work, uniting a pretty fu***d bit of vocal manipulation with a full fat bassline and subtly honking flutes to make a rhythm that's a whole lot sexier than it looks on paper. On the flipside 'Gridlock' ups the pace to a smart jack 'n shuffle pattern accentuated by a massive subbass heave that will drive dancer's asses wild and inspire much fonky moving on a good floor near you. This is premier level Teutonic house goods for fans of Prosumer, Tama Sumo, My My, Soulphiction, DJ Koze or any of those kinky dudes (and dudettes) from Berlin or Cologne. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

ZAP, Anton - Take It As It Comes EP

ZAP, Anton - Take It As It Comes EP (Underground Quality) Comentários: Just Ed's imprint Underground Quality produces four dreamy Deep House cuts by Anton Zap that's pegged somewhere between Detroit and New Jersey via Moscow. Some very nice trippy sounds layer up the production and create a deep foundation with well paced beats taking the whole thing stedily onwards. A recommended purchase for fans of Jus Ed, Lerosa and STL. in phonica [Para Ouvir/Samples]
