RENE HELL - Porcelain Opera (Album of the week)

RENE HELL - Porcelain Opera (Type) Comentários: The newest addition to the Type roster is one Rene Hell, a cult underground noisenik better known as Jeff Witscher. His numerous releases and pseudonyms for labels including Arbor, Not Not Fun and Chronditic Sound (among a tonne of others) have given space for his untamed imagination to roam various disparate styles and ideas. For Rene Hell Witscher sort of places himself alongside Emeralds or Oneohtrix Point Never with alter-dimensional synth trips referencing classic kosmiche, but with the lustre of nostalgia picked away to reveal a decidedly modern grasp of electronic psychedelia. Much like his peers, he manages to envelope his archaic source sounds with a forward thinking sensibility that's conscious of developments which occurred between the early 70s and the early 10s, allowing him to avoid the pitfalls of kitsch, but play around with more honest cliche. Hell maps out a patch that focusses and aligns the visions of Cluster into Basic Channel while adding his own special enzymes to catalyse unpredictable psilocybic changes, a controlled but near-random factor liable to spew out tape chewed voices and dart off into tangential black holes or bloom into star burst harmonics like a box of illicit Chinese fireworks. Eschewing the constrictions of software programming, Hell's intuitive hardware approach enhances these possibilities, take the album centre piece 'L.Minx' as the prime example, where the central synthline shudders and spasms in an electrical storm of distorted, blackened blows, before diverging and converging within the stereo field to defuse and reconnect your cerebral hemispheres with devilishly studied efficiency. A noisenik's sense of freedom gives him license to create textures and tones which would likely be frowned upon in the original Kosmiche scene, but here on 'Razor. P+' they mark the track with a modernist aesthetic that puts history to good use and thrills us in the process. Witscher's synth gospels are more than just a flash in the pan and proves that there's still much terrain to be covered in the recently remembered lands of pure analogue synth music. Very highly recommended. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

Christian GLEINSER - Electric Winter (Strange Life) Comentários: Super winner this one from Christian Gleinser, some mentioned his sound as beeing "german folk electronics", in my opinion this is the perfect soundtrack to a movie who talks about «Love» somewhere in a far future era. It sounds perfect! by mundourbano [Para Ouvir/Samples]

Satomi Taniyama - Portopia

Satomi Taniyama - Portopia (Strange Life) Comentários: "A new artist signed on Strangelife records, all the way from Japan. Satomi "schlomo" Taniyama, a garbage man from Oda in the shimane prefecture, send us a bunch of cassette tapes influenced by the Portopia serial murder case (One of Japan's first and most famous text adventures), which will be the name of his debut album too. This is probably going to be the strangest Strange Life release so is a preview of a track called "Phillipine Sea" which is relatively normal compared to the other stuff." This record is a dangerous/appealing combination between sex and computer game sounds, Ace! by mundo urbano [Para Ouvir/Samples]

FACT mix 152: Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti

OK, there’s no Single Most Influential Musician of One Said Period. Music – and indeed, the world – doesn’t work like that. But if you were to assemble some royal pantheon of the most influencial musicians of the last ten to fifteen years, then Ariel Pink would be near the top of the pile. [Download mix here]

EMERALDS - Does It Look Like I'm Here?

EMERALDS - Does It Look Like I'm Here? (Editions Mego) Comentários: After a glut of super-limited CDrs, cassettes and vinyl pressings, Cleveland, Ohio's Emeralds present their most developed album to date on Editions Mego. Following the trend of recent albums 'Does It Look Like I'm Here?' takes a different approach from their early work, eschewing lengthy improvised jams for a sculpted and highly organised sound which thankfully hasn't lost any of the swirling synth magic they've become known for. As they've matured and developed a stronger sense of identity, the comparisons to Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel and Popol Vuh are still relevant, but with this album they've harnessed the elemental chaos into well honed and efficient movements, with sublimely intuitive key changes and melting textures skillfully gauged for piloerect impact, defining their art with ever more graceful contours. We're only 2 minutes into the cascading arpeggios and pastoral guitars of 'Candy Shoppe' before they hit us with the first pivotal bliss surge. It's these moments that define their sound and reflect the comparison to "cheesy" new age or kosmiche, moments of open-hearted honesty delivered without ironic discharge. We find these moments scattered across the album, in the spiraling clasp of guitars and burbling synth in 'Double Helix', the breathless ascension of 'Genetic' and the tactile envelopment of 'Goes By'. 'Does It Look Like I'm Here' is a magical accomplishment and should be experienced by any lovers of affecting electronic music, Just remember to turn your euphoria blocker off. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

DENSELAND - Chunk (Mosz) Comentários: Denseland brings together vocalist David Moss with German instrumentalists Hannes Stroble and Hanno Leichtmann. Their album “Chunk”, which is out on Mosz, is probably the most tense piece of music we are going to come across with in a while. Strings, bass, drums, subtle but haunting synths and the voice of Mr. Moss combine to create a heavy atmosphere that recalls both industrialists of the past, dubstep (in its earlier, darker incarnation), the current developments on drone or even improv jazz. Not to say that “Chunk” is an industrial album. Neither this music could be referred to as dubstep or drone. What has been created by Denseland is not a good fit for any existing category. A clear highlight on the album is the way David Moss works his voice. Even though he mostly whispers throughout the record, listeners will not feel smothered by it. It might make more sense to experience “Chunk” as an entire piece. Nonetheless, “Low Velocity Zone” and “Scrape It (Up)” are personal favourites. review by Filipe Oliveira [Para Ouvir/Samples]

ACTRESS - Splazsh

One of France's foremost urban artists, L'Atlas is inspired by the symmetry of typography and the smallest architectural details. He once claimed 'manholes are more beautiful than all the paintings in the museum'. Born in Toulouse in 1978 and now based in Paris, he often works by spray-painting the streets with trademark labarynthine patterns, and later transposing them onto canvas. He was recently commissioned to construct one of his giant compass installations in the plaza of the Pompidou Centre and is currently taking his pictures on a world tour, exhibiting them in informal settings on the streets of Delhi, Jakarta, Rio and New York amongst other places.

ARK - Arkpocalypse Now

ARK - Arkpocalypse Now (Perlon) Comentários: The Perlon mainstay and fidgety micro-house pioneer returns with his first long player since '05s 'Caliente'. Longterm fans will be glad to know he's not fucked with his acclaimed formula, still creating tricksy house grooves informed by a love of jerky 80s funk and a knack for quirky offbeat edits. There's a handful of real dancefloor tracks like the perky 'I Can Come' and 'Sugar of Brain', which isn't to say the rest ain't funky, but the structure and ideas are maybe more suited to home consumption as an album. Those 'floor dedicated tracks will doubtless appear on 12" with a fatter pressing at some point! in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

Jon Savage's The Secret Public

Taking it’s name from an art fanzine Jon Savage and Linder Sterling published in 1978, 'The Secret Public' exhibits photographs, montages, colleges and show bills the pair produced between 1976 and 1981, capturing their perspective on urban life from a crucial period in British punk. The name 'The Secret Public' was initially coined as a reaction to the fact very little of what they were reflecting in their work was mentioned in the mainstream or even the music press at that time. Jon Savage is the author of acclaimed punk and youth culture books 'England’s Dreaming' and 'Teenage'. [+here]

DOKKEBI Q - Hardcore Cherry Bon Bon

DOKKEBI Q - Hardcore Cherry Bon Bon (3QReq) Comentários: "Hardcore Cherry Bon Bon. Dokebbi Q actually predate King Midas Sound, and have a fierce reputation in the live setting where their twisted blend of ragga, noise, digi-dub and more is overwhelming. Based in Hackney but originally from Tokyo, Dokkebi Q have released several EPs, but this will be their first album. While recording it, Hitomi also found time to work further with Kevin Martin (the pair of them also record as Black Chow, who featured on last year’s Hyperdub compilation, 5, and have also collaborated on a recent 12″ for Loefah’s Swamp 81 label) and collaborate with Starkey (she guests on his new album, Ear Drums and Black Holes) while Gorgonn formed Devilman with infamous noisenik DJ Scotch Egg"... in factmagazine. " The results found on 'Hardcore Cherry Bon Bon' are extreme, restless and thrillingly unstable, like finding yourself unexpectedly p*ssed in the middle of a gig before someone offers a nose of something and you wake up in a squat with a three legged dog trying to seduce you. FACT mix 146: Mike Dehnert

FACT mix 146 is a blistering live set from one of techno’s deadliest operators, Mike Dehnert. The set was recorded last month at Berghain, just one of the clubs that Dehnert razes to the ground on a regular basis. With a sleek but muscular sound, bass-rooted and with unbelievable flex and skip to its rhythms, there’s something wonderfully urgent and essential about Dehnert’s tracks – not a single note or drum-hit is wasted. Though the lurching syncopations might at times make you think of dubstep and garage, fundamentally we never deviate from the main business of industrial-burnished and tunnelistic techno. It’s serious stuff, for sure, but it’s totally ecstatic to boot. [+here]

TOM TRAGO - The Flour Green

TOM TRAGO - The Flour Green (Nod Navigators) Comentários: With the love of the old and the hunger for the new in his beats and music, Tom Trago is continuously pushing the boundaries and clearly putting Amsterdam on the map for dirty instrumental and experimental beats. .On this EP, the warmth of soul music and the strength of electronic sounds are combined naturally. Instrumental sounds which are universal without the restrictions of vocals and as stated by Gil Scott-Heron 'Words are for the mind, but the notes are for the soul.' Amongst many other exciting projects, Tom Trago is also featured on Jay Scarlett and Cinnaman's BEAT DIMENSIONS project. in rushhour [Para Ouvir/Samples]

DIMLITE - Prismic Tops

DIMLITE - Prismic Tops - (Now Again US) Comentários: It’s been a startling couple of years for instrumental beats of all persuasions: the likes of LA’s Brainfeeder crew and Glasgow’s LuckyMe collective have developed styles with a scope far beyond creating merely ‘instrumental hip hop’. Amongst all the hype and promotion, one of the music’s reclusive architects seems to have been mysteriously overlooked. However, ask the likes of Gaslamp Killer or Ras G and they’ll tell you the same thing: Dimlite’s production was astounding from the start. His EPs of 2003 and debut album Runbox Weathers two years later revealed a Swiss producer beholden to no one, possessing a style as nuanced as his friend Prefuse 73 and yet enriched by a careworn romanticism and quirkiness that rewarded repeat listens and has, over time, made him something of a ‘producer’s producer’.Another album, singles, remixes and side-projects followed, taking Dimlite’s sound further left, further into a singular world where soul music, latin rhythms, hiphop and more are reconstituted into dreamy, lovelorn beat constructions. And so he takes his place on Now-Again, home to a cadre of similarly singular spirits such as The Heliocentrics and The Whitefield Brothers, each bent on refracting music history through their own unique lenses. And while copycat producers abound, Dimlite’s uniqueness is only throw into sharper relief. It’s clear the moment he sings, such as on EP highlight Elbow Flood or the astonishing (and miniature) closer, Can’t Get Used To Those. It’s apparent in every one of his strangely abrupt changes. It’s even in his song titles. Perhaps Prismic Tops will be the record that sparks a critical reappraisal of this gifted producer’s work. in rushhour[Para Ouvir/Samples]

Fabric 52: Optimo (Espacio)

The 52nd Fabric mix CD will be compiled by Optimo (Espacio), and released this May (June in the US). Optimo is the name of a hugely popular and influential Glasgow club night, ran by J.D. Twitch and J.G. Wilkes. The pair met on a bus from Glasgow to Edinburgh, the city where Twitch was running his Pure club night, a regular session that played host to Richie Hawtin, Green Velvet, Derrick May, Jeff Mills and more in its lifespan. Twitch was later approached by Glasgow’s Sub Club to start a Sunday night session at the venue, and turned to Wilkes for a partnership. Optimo – a genuine anything goes club night in a sea of parties that claimed similar policy without the balls to back it up – was born, and in its time at the Sub Club has featured sets from Liquid Liquid, LCD Soundsystem, Shackleton, TV on the Radio, Grace Jones and countless other luminaries alongside the two residents. It was recently announced that Optimo, at least in its current guise, will soon end, but the night will leave in its legacy countless memories, and a permanent status as an inspiration to more recent Glasgow clubnights like Numbers. It also, of course, will leave us this Fabric mix, which is released on May 10 in the UK and June 29 in the US, and in typical Optimo style, features music across the board from Fad Gadget, Oni Ahyun, Thomas Brinkmann, Crazy Cousinz and more. Sarsparilla - The Count

SARSPARILLA - Slave To The Cat Gang

SARSPARILLA - Slave To The Cat Gang (The Alphabet Set Ireland) Comentários: Sarsparilla aka Damien Lynch was raised in a small synth community in the green mountains of Wicklow. "Slave to the Cat Gang" has just been released on Alphabet Set. It’s a 10 song collection of electro boom-synth/ drum machine electronic music that is heavily-inspired by the soundtrack of John Carpenter ’80s films. So obviously, it’s awesome if you’ve ever digged those halogen-lit dark night horror robo-zombie cop movies or The Thing or Halloween or creepy movie soundtracks and old school electronica in general.
