Erwin Wurm: Wear Me Out by Walter Van Beirendonck

The open air Middelheim Museum in Antwerp hosts an exhibition dedicated to the work of the legendary sculptor, some of it in collaboration with fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck. Despite early ambitions to become a painter, Austrian artist Erwin Wurm has spent the last 30 years exploring, questioning and redefining the traditional art of sculpting. He has contributed pieces to collections across the world, from the Guggenheim Museum in New York to the Pompidou Centre in Paris. But Wurm is particularly known for his clever and humorous ‘one minute sculptures’, where members of the public are invited to become their own temporary pieces of art under instruction from Wurm. Like the name suggests, they are constructed and dismantled in an instant, with only a snap shot or drawing to remember them by. His fascination with the interaction between people and every day objects brought him together with Antwerp fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck to create what Beirendonck describes as ‘walking sculptures’. Dazed spoke to Erwin Wurm about the collaboration and how he defends his sub-ephemeral art work... Read More

"The anonymous Dubai-based artist talks to us about the recent political uprising in the region and why his artwork features the dead al-Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden." UBIK is part of a new breed or emerging artists from the so called MENA region [Middle East and North Africa]. Originally from India, UBIK moved to Dubai five years ago to develop his practise as an artist. UBIK’s recent body of work examines the recent socio-political tectonic shift in the MENA region. He explores the optimism of the new wave "social media 9-5 weekday anarchists" who seem to promote a sense of optimism that is both convenient and sceptical. UBIK references his views through a mash-up of pop-culture laced with his usual dose of dark humour. In his own words, "suddenly everyone is a political pundit in this new world diss-order!" via dazed digital

XANDER HARRIS - Urban Gothic

XANDER HARRIS - Urban Gothic (Not Not Fun) Comentários: NNF's latest pick-up is Xander Harris, a classically trained "keyboard-creep" with a slick line in synthesized horror redolent of Umberto's uncanny couplet of LPs. However, Xander's vision is focussed slightly further down the time scale, taking cues from John Carpenter, the futurist gaze of Chicago/Italo and sounds from the cusp of Kosmische/New Age. But those are just aesthetic differences, and the magic really lies in a shared mastery of engrossing, evocative narratives, from the track titles to the shadowy arrangements and the distinct mood they make. The more percussive, driven dance tracks such as 'Opening Credits', 'F*cking Eat Your Face' and 'I Want More Than Just Blood' are infectiously successful and give some of the biggest highlights, while the synth-painted scenes of 'Splatter In The Mouth' lean towards sharply rendered, yet lo-fi homages to Carpenter, or more likely those guys further down the sonic food chain whose soundtracks have infected the psyche of a generation. GILLETTE - I teaser

Gillette - Gillette (100% Silk US) Comentários: Utopian cities aren’t built in a day, but obelisk-o discos high-rise and fall during a Gillette night. Ladies and gentlemen, we’re not floating through space, we’re riding the Gillette monorail through a black-lit, airbrushed metropolis where ‘cussive keys are cold currency. It’s Gattaca enacted, Tommorowland for the modest techno fan, lullabies for the liquid metalhead, a Blade runner for your money. Dualities are dueling for yr ear-space: melancholic yet uplifting, picturesque while bleak, indefinite but somehow fated. Remote with control. When Gillette plays you’re the ping pong, the dance floor’s yr game table, and those hand claps you hear are the sounds the fans make when you cross the line. Now dance humans, make your kraft work.
