Herbert W. Kapitzki studied from 1941 to 1943 in Danzig with Fritz Pfuhle (* 1878 in Berlin; † 1969 in Hamburg ), from 1946 to 1948 in the working group for fine arts in the Bernsteinschule with Hans Ludwig Pfeiffer and from 1949 to 1952 at the Academy of Arts in Stuttgart with Willi Baumeister .

Kapitzki has been working as a freelance designer in the field of visual communication since 1953 , for many years with a studio in Magstadt near Stuttgart. From 1956 to 1968 he worked for the Baden-Württemberg State Trade Office - Design Center Stuttgart as a designer. Since 1957 he has won several awards for “ The Best German Poster ”. In 1958 Kapitzki became a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI). In 1964, his works were shown in the graphics department at documenta III in Kasselshown. His work has taken part in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany and around the world.

From 1964 to 1968 he was a lecturer (from 1965 as head) at the visual communication department at the Ulm School of Design . In 1967 he participated in the design of the German Pavilion at the world exhibition in Montreal . In 1968 he founded the Institute for Visual Communication and Design . In 1969, Kapitzki became Vice President of the Association of German Graphic Designers (BDG) .

In 1970 he was appointed professor for visual communication at the State University of Fine Arts in Berlin, he became deputy director of the university in 1974 and was department head for a few years until his retirement in 1990. In 1984 he was visiting professor at the university Al-Minya in Egypt .

Herbert W. Kapitzki was also responsible for the design of the City of Frankfurt am Main from 1970 to 1973 for the Historical Museum Frankfurt , from 1973 to 1975 for the corporate identity of Schering AG in Berlin and in 1981 for the information system in public service buildings in the city of Berlin. At the HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd he worked as a guest lecturer in the communication design course from 1992 to 1995.

Herbert W. Kapitzki was the founding board member of the Association of German Graphic Designers eV VDGD in Stuttgart in 1993 and one year later, in 1994, he was also co-founder of the “ Forum for Design. Initiative for use-oriented design and design-relevant sciences eV ”in Ulm.
