At the end of the 90s, he joined Supernova, a unique proto-hauntological project in the Portuguese music scene, aesthetically close to bands such as Stereolab, Broadcast, or Plone, with whom they shared a strong fascination for analog synthesizers, industrial design, retro-futurism, sci-fi imagery or pioneering electronics. And looking back now, it seems clear that this may have been the first manifestation of a hauntological sensibility in Portugal, long before its time.
In 2011 JP Daniel co-founded Beautify Junkyards, being heavily involved in the songwriting process during the band's first five years, including the first album of originals and the single from Other Voices that shaped their sound and paved the way for Ghost Box. Left the band in 2016 due to ethical incompatibilities and to dedicate himself to his new project, Folclore Impressionista, which he’s now running in parallel with Aural Design and Russian Library.
Aural Design is a solo project by João Paulo Daniel, a portal to deal with his obsession with the end of Utopias, namely those related to the progressive popular modernism of the 70s and the dystopias it generated, and the idea of escapism as a manifesto of cultural resistance against the impossibility of reaching them. It’s a conjured place where the hidden links between art, ethics, and politics are always intertwined, something that is also shared and forms part of the foundations of the Russian Library. Aural Design recently released the EP “The Dead Astronaut” on Woodford Halse, with a title borrowed from JG Ballard, “a metaphor about the disappearance of the progressive modernism and utopianism, and its psychological effect on social imaginary, which has been replaced by a sense of finitude and exhaustion that we seem unable to escape from”.
