M.U. PODCAST #137: JIM HAYNES (SEPTEMBER 2022)

Cover Art by Bruno Lopes (Mundo Urbano), September 2022. Marcel Breuer, Cesca Chair, 1928.

About Jim Haynes: Describing his work through the pithy phrase, ‘I rust things,’ Jim Haynes (b. 1972) is a California-based artist who has developed a vocabulary of decay that he has applied to photography, video, installation, and sound. Haynes’ sound work draws from shortwave radio static, electric field disturbances, controlled feedback manipulation, and numerous textural scrapings, manifesting the broken minimalism of magnetic drones and volatile tactility. This engineering of disparate materials and media seeks to evince the unpredictability of decay, manifest its potential for a rough-hewn beauty, and bear witness to its inevitability.

He has exhibited internationally at Electric Works (San Francisco), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Berkeley Art Museum, The Exploratorium (San Francisco), WestSpace (Melbourne, Australia), Jack Straw Productions (Seattle), Eyedrum (Atlanta), Diapason (New York), and The Lab (San Francisco). Haynes has published his work through the Helen Scarsdale Agency, 23five Incorporated, Intransitive, Observatoire, and Elevator Bath. He has collaborated with Steven Stapleton (Nurse With Wound), M.S. Waldron (IRR. app. (ext.)), Keith Evans, Allison Holt, and Loren Chasse. Haynes is the sole occupant at the Helen Scarsdale Agency (founded in 2003).

Haynes has published his work through Editions Mego, Semperflorens, Hooker Vision, Noisendo,  Elevator Bath,  Intransitive Recordings, Observatoire, Contour Editions, aussenraum records,  and Audio. Visuals. Atmosphere., The Tapeworm...

His latest work "Imsonia" was released on Sentimental Productions (Ukrain, 24 August 2022): « "insomnia" is one of my albums constructed during the pandemic era, and I will be bold and say that this is fucking corker of a noise album. it also must be stated that the finished copies of "insomnia" arrived at my front door on February 24, 2022, the day when missiles began flying over Kyiv and the house of Edward sol, the Ukrainian musician who commissioned this album for his sentimental productions. and thus, "insomnia" takes on another set of metaphors, as I can no longer extract my thoughts on this album from the despair and anger I feel about an unprovoked war. that said, Edward has an entirely different, far more optimistic take on this album in relation to the war, that of a brighter future and of something to strive toward during Ukraine's strife, stating that 'spiritually, I see it [this album] as an anchor for the better life.' interestingly enough, Edward received his copied many many months later than I, due to the difficult logistics of navigating within war as well as complete incompetence beyond all of our control. and he proposed the release date for this record as august 24, 2022 - the day celebrating Ukrainian independence. I heartily agree. Eternal gratitude to Edward sol for his persistence in publishing this album. I hope I can meet him in person one day and have a drink with him. »
