M.U. PODCAST #138: PETTERIL (SEPTEMBER 2022)
Cover Art by Bruno Lopes (Mundo Urbano), September 2022. ~ |
From a 200-year-old old water mill in Cumbria UK, Petteril (the moniker of James Gilbert) makes emotive, textural, electroacoustic music inspired by the complexities of the human condition, nature, and the parallels between the two. Using a dying accordion, baritone guitar, field recordings, and electronics, Gilbert improvises, manipulates, and processes sound to craft narrative-driven musical collages — a cathartic response to personal struggles and rural remote living. His last project "CYRE" was released via Puremagnetik on September 9, 2021. "CYRE" is a cathartic release of pent-up anxieties, anger, and despair at the state of the world today. Surprising then, that CYRE has such a broad view and is so full of optimism.

About the mix: It's a mess here in the UK at the moment. Our shambolic government is doing nothing to halt 80% energy bill increases (if they increased beer by that much it’d cost £33 a pint!), the water companies are pumping raw sewage into our seas and our options for a new PM are just as shambolic (and dangerous) as the outgoing one (and let’s not even mention Brexit). That’s just the UK; it’s not lost on me that the whole world is on a knife edge at the moment: conflict, natural disasters, the climate crisis. It looks f***ing gloomy. I guess this mix reflects that. How could it not?
Having said that, the sun keeps rising and setting and yesterday I saw a heron, a deer, a hedgehog, and a bat. All in one day! So… you know, take a breath. I hope this mix helps you escape for 60mins - Petteril.
