i-D MAGAZINE - May Issue feat Agyness Deyn
Into the i-D office stomps model Agyness Deyn, dressed in leather baker boy cap, oversized men’s suit jacket, bondage trousers and sparkling white DM’s, her silver pistol pendant proudly on display. “HIYAAAA,” she shouts from reception before striding over and giving a hug and a kiss like the kind you receive from your bezzy mates. She sits on my desk and we take a look through the last few pictures shot for this special, one-off Agyness Deyn issue of i-D. Of course the first ones we open are the Nick Knight nudes. “AGHHHH” she screams, as we take in the full frontals, “Actually…” she pauses… “They are dead good, aren’t they?” Of course. Dedicating the past year to working on this issue, Agyness has been an inspiration from day one, bringing forth ideas, popping by for meetings, writing music reviews and generally being rather fabulous, fun and a pleasure to be around. Since inception to realisation, her stature and cultural significance has grown outside of the confines of the catwalk. She is the model of the moment, has bagged the London Fashion week cover of Grazia, appeared in the papers more often than a popstar, presented at top award shows, appeared on prime time UK chat show Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and scooped the cover of Time, whilst the brilliant website Perez Hilton describes her as “ferocious, diva, fierce” and “YUM!” All for a 25-year-old former chip shop worker from Rawtenstall in Manchester. For this issue Agyness had to endure shooting outside in the snow wearing just her knickers, driving a tank with full-on conjunctivitis, and throwing shapes atop a ladder in Westwood ball gown during the London hurricane. Chatting to my Mum back home in Wales the other day, she summed up Agyness’ appeal in an instant. “I saw her on the cover of Hello and thought ‘Ooh, I love the short style of her hair!’ She looks so different in the magazines, because of the way she dresses and she has such a pretty face. She’s got a lovely face… she stands out because she looks lovely!” in id
